New album out soon. http://theinnocencemission.com/ https://theinnocencemission.bandcamp.com/album/hello-i-feel-the-same ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Oct 2015 22:55:22 -0400 From: JoAnn Whetsell Subject: first thoughts, new releases So we're heading towards the end of the year with some ectoish new releases. I thought I'd post some initial reactions. Most of these albums have only had a few listens so far, in some cases only one. Looking forward to hearing other people's thoughts on these. Metric - Pagans in VegasI like it, but not as much as Fantasies and Synthetica. In some cases, I feel like the electronics draw away from the songs. "The Shade" sounds like it's got a computer game going on, and the vocals are kind of subsumed in "Cascades." But the songs are enjoyable, and I think this will grow on me. Sexwitch - SexwitchMiddle Eastern, psychedelic, progressive rock, trance influences. This is quite different from Natasha Khan's work as Bat for Lashes. It's dark and compelling, ritualistic (in that the music and singing is often quite repetitive), and primal (the sounds she makes!). I find it really interesting. Patty Griffin - Servant of LoveAlternates between haunting, acoustic tracks (1, 3, 5, 7); blues (2, 4, 9, 10, 11); and folk (6, 8, 13). "Rider of Days" sounds like it could have been on the Impossible Dream album. "Snake Charmer" might have been on Flaming Red, or maybe a b-side. I'm not much of a blues fan (indeed, I don't care for "Noble Ground," probably the bluesiest song on the album), but I find this album promising, and I'm crossing my fingers that it will continue to grow on me. Shawn Colvin - UncoveredShawn Colvin's second album of covers is perhaps as good as her first (I've been loving that album for more than twenty years). The songs are, again, mostly ones I'm not familiar with. I do think her first covers album had more variety in mood and tempo, so on first listen this one can seem a bit samey, but the subtle differences are coming out with more listens. Lizz Wright - Freedom & SurrenderLizz's voice is as wonderful as ever and can convey so many moods and emotions. There is much to love (Somewhere Down the Mystic, Freedom especially) but there are also some songs that drag (Here and Now, the Gregory Porter duet Right Where You Are, and, sadly, the cover of Nick Drake's River Man). The album is also a bit long (just over a full hour). Without the three above-mentioned tracks, it would have been pretty perfect. Rickie Lee Jones - The Other Side of DesireThere are some fun songs, and some definite New Orleans sounds, and some harder to place/very Rickie songs, and so far I'm liking it, especially compared to her recent releases. Glen Hansard - Didn't He RambleNo sophomore slump here, just more of Hansard's folk/rock, sometimes so plaintive and emotional. There are new sounds too - the horns in "Lowly Deserter," the Celtic influences in "McCormack's Wall". Excellent. There's also a new single by Daughter (Doing the Right Thing) and Ane Brun's latest should be released in North America sometime. Happy listening, everyone. Enjoy the weekend.
