I hate to be bossy, but you simply HAVE to take a few minutes to check out these wonderful recent releases! Here we go: *"Remembering Mountains: Unheard Songs by Karen Dalton"* I was unfamiliar with Karen Dalton, a folk singer from the 70's whose 2 albums have amassed quite a cult following. The albums she recorded were covers of other people's music - but recently her estate (she passed in 1993) released a batch of original lyrics and basic chords that Karen had written. The record label Tompkins Square asked an incredible lineup of female artists to interpret and flesh out these songs. The artists involved with this project could not be any more Ecto. They include: *Sharon Van Etten, Patty Griffin, Julia Holter, Lucinda Williams, Marissa Nadler*, and many others. The focus is definitely on the poetic words - most songs are accompanied by simple piano or guitar. Really haunting, captivating, beautiful stuff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXMTRwbzu84 *Princess Chelsea: "The Great Cybernetic Depression"* The album title and cover art intrigued me to check out this release, which is the New Zealand artist's sophomore album. It was love at first listen. Whispery, angelic vocals - singing sad songs set to upbeat keyboards and electronics. This is the most exciting new discovery this year. Hope people will give her a shot! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yj2Xq5W7ywc *Anneli Drecker: "Rocks & Straws" * It's been 10 years since Anneli Drecker (lead singer for the 90's dream-pop band Bel Canto) released her last solo album, and it's so great to hear her voice again. For the record, her 2005 solo album "Frolic" didn't do much for me. It was a bit heavy on the dance/electronica spectrum. But with this new album, she's back to more orchestral, organic arrangements. "Rocks & Straws" is a love letter to Norway, with lyrics lifted from Norwegian poet Arvid Hanssen. A magical album. https://vimeo.com/126357261 Happy Listening, Paul ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V16 #1427 ****************************
