I really like the mood their music evokes, and appreciate the selection of instruments they use. However, they do one thing to their music that, I'm sad to say, makes it unlistenable to me. They add some kind of pulsing effect, or use a pulsating filter or something. That's the best I can describe it. It would make me physically nauseous if I tried to endure it for too long. It seems like I can actually feel the change in pressure on my eardrums that the pulsations deliver. High pressure, then low pressure, then high again, repeat and repeat and repeat. It's very uncomfortable to listen to; at times it is merely annoying, but at worst it's nausea-making, as I indicated above. It must be just me, because otherwise why would people do this to their music? Their work is basically ruined for me. Does anyone else understand this? I'm not talking personal preference here, I'm talking actual physical discomfort. - --Doug ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Mar 2015 21:19:36 -0500 From: Paul Jensen Subject: Re: Shrines I totally know what you're talking about. The music on "Shrines" kind of pulses in-and-out, almost like someone is fiddling with the volume. I was turned off by the effect at first, but then it started to become weirdly mesmerizing and addicting. I find it fascinating to listen to - it feels like my brain sort of "fills in the gaps" - it's like I hear continuous music in my head, even when the sound is intentionally dropping out. What they've done throughout "Shrines" is very experimental - but it really works for me. I think it's brilliant. But I can completely understand how it would annoy some people, and even cause physical discomfort! Did you give their newer album a listen? I haven't noticed them relying on this technique on "Another Eternity". The songs feel more straightforward eletronic/pop to me. I'm a bit underwhelmed by the album at the moment, which is a shame. I'd like to give it a few more chances - but it just doesn't feel very fresh to me, especially with how unique "Shrines" sounded.
