My, that woman can put on a show. But first, some mention should be made of Why I Don't Go to Gigs Any More, exhibit 23: Turning up to discover that the person you want to see, the headliner, isn't actually on until 10pm, and that there are THREE support acts on before. I seem to remember this happening last time I saw Carina at the Water Rats in Kings Cross, but then we just drifted in for the last supporting act, a then-unknown Anna Calvi (and if you haven't already, do check out her eponymous debut: it's quite stunning). This time, however, having been awake since 3am that morning, I stood, glazed, through all three of them: first, a sweet-picking acoustic guitar troubador, a sort of Jorma Kakounen/Arlo Guthrie type who played a mean guitar and had a great sense of humour, but a rather banal approach to songwriting itself. There then followed a heavy metal band. Yep, apparently fallen off the back of Wayne's World, a weird cross between Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Uriah Heep and fronted by a lanky, long-haired, leering frontsman whose energy made up for the fact that he wasn't that vocally impressive. Good, dumb, deafening fun, it has to be said. Next up was Katie Dove-Dixon (check her out at /www.katiedove-dixon.com) a young singer/songwritr/keyboardist who crosses a big, ringing Florence Welch type voice with a Kate Nash sensibility. Loads of promise with some nice harmonies and cello playing, but the music kind of clumped along and the lyrics were often horrendous. Still, worth keeping an ear out for. So, Carina: vibrant, electric, a Fury with a guitar, howling like a banshee and coming on like Medea at an open-mic night. And I mean all of this in the best possible way. She sang a lot of new songs from an album coming up in the autumn, which sounds like it will be a...umm...challenging album, certainly a change from the gentler, more haunting EP she was touting last time she was over. She also treated us to a number of songs from hr first album, which is being re-released...on vinyl. I seem to have missed the boat on all of this, finding as usual that it's hard work being a fan and all too easy to drop out of the loop. Quite a crowd there for her, as well, much moreso than at the Water Rats, which is encouraging. Good for her, but it did make for an almighty scrum at the t-shirts stand afterwards, one which I decided to pass on. Come back soon, Carina!
