I figured she needed to do something to reinvent/evolve, since Ellipse sort of seemed like the pinnacle of her sound-to-date, and I was worried that the result would be too insular or esoteric (like Reba Hasko's Delicate Cyclone, which I totally respect as an artistic endeavor but have a really hard time listening to). I also like that "Sparks" covers such diverse ground sonically without sounding scattershot, that seems like a feat. I *want* to like it, but so far I'm having the dreaded I Don't Care reaction to it. Thanks, Jason and Tim, for the music to check out, though. Several of these I hadn't heard of. In lieu of new music, I've been having a good time re-discovering older discs. I love it when I remember exactly why I was enthusiastic about them when they were new, though a few of them are winding up on musicboomarang.com because they're no longer quite justifying their shelf space (the dreaded IDC again--I prefer to care). - --Neile On Thu, 11 Sep 2014, Jason Gordon wrote: > i'm really looking forward to the MBD as well (preordered it a while ago)... > B > i am loving the FKA Twigs and Tune-Yards discs also. > B > hugely disappointed by the imogen heap album - i just find it boring and > missing the spark of her earlier work...too much production and not enough > hook maybe? > B > other favorites so far are the new Jolie Holland, Mirel Wagner, Cold Specks, > Samaris, andB Lykke Li > B > i agree with Neile that theB most recentB Melissa Leveaux disc is quite good > as well (was just listeneing to it on the way in to work this morning > coincidentally) > B > -jason > On Thu, Sep 11, 2014 at 11:27 AM, Tim Jones-Yelvington > wrote: > ...wasn't familiar with Emma Ruth Rundle yet. Tune-yards is my list of favorites also, but my other favorites include -- Lyla Foy's Mirrors in the Sky (still surprised no one else on ecto has mentioned this, it's so good) Cibo Matto's Hotel Valentine Neneh Cherry's Blank Project Imogen Heaps' Sparks (surprised no one has mentioned this one yet either) Kimbra's the Golden Echo Kristeen Young's the Knife Shift FKA Twigs's LP1 as well as the great new work from Noe Venable, Anne Heaton (hard to believe that these two would release material and not land in my favoritest favorites, but they're both great albums), Jenny Scheinman, Banks, St. Vincent, Carla Bozulich. I couldn't get through more than a song or two of that new Sarah McLachlan album, ugh. I like the Tori Amos but thought it was inessential. Kyla LaGrange's sophomore album is nice enough but sort of forgettable, a lot of these new Kate-ish electronic women are a little bit too by-the-numbers. ...And I still haven't really listened to the Jonatha Brooke, Suzanne Vega or Natalie Merchant releases. ~Tim On Thu, Sep 11, 2014 at 10:01 AM, neile wrote: > Thanks for the heads up, JoAnn!
