Poppy folkish with hints of Elysian Fields and other atmospheric smoky torchy stuff. She has a self-titled 2013 album and a new single 'Swedish Strawberries.' NPR is also previewing Lykke Li's new album: http://www.npr.org/2014/04/27/306154988/first-listen-lykke-li-i-never-learn. And the New York Times has an interesting profile on Sia: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/20/magazine/sia-furler-the-socially-phobic-pop - -star.html?ref=todayspaper. I was disappointed years ago when she said she wasn't going to make any more records, but I had no idea of the personal circumstances underlying that decision. I'm glad she's tackled her demons and will be releasing a new record in June. Meanwhile next Tuesday will be a busy one. Besides the new Tune-Yards and Lykke Li, there are new releases from Sarah McLachlan (not that exciting any more, but I'm ever hopeful), Judith Owen, Rachael Sage (EP), and Jill Sobule! I the criteria sound reasonable, except that I'd add a condition that the latest main release be in 2014 or 2013 (otherwise, one could add any number of artists that only had one, two or three releases in the '80s, which, most likely isn't the point of a favourite new artists list). I'll try: 1. Phildel 2. Lydia Loveless 3. Birdy 4. Lissie 5. Chloe Charles 6. Melissa Laveaux 7. Laura Mvula 8. Lana Del Rey Then there are the ones to whom I haven't listened quite enough to make a definite judgement (but they're likely to make the cut): 9. Zaz 10. DakhaBrakha (from Ukraine) DVA (Czech Republic) Eliza Rickman Im not sure that Arc Iris debut will be an album I return to a lot, but their concert was stunning. neal On Apr 30, 2014, at 1:16 PM, Raphael Schweikert wrote: > I realise now my list is totally missing Polly Scattergood (and, time will > tell, Daughter)!
