Warpaint left me cold and while I liked the first half of Joan as Police Woman's The Classic, the second half seemed to drag on forever. Still need to give Marissa Nadler's and Charlotte Martin's latest ones a spin, and I might try Braxton/Babyface as well. Other highlights of the year so far (F/M -- fe/male vocals): Bow to Each Other -- 'The Urge Drums' (F) [contender for album of the year] . These two ladies (a married couple, actually) have recorded this album with Susanne Sundfo/r (who provides some backing vocals as well). Sad Scandinavian soundscapes, synthesizers coupled with woodwind, personal lyrics. Highlights: Darkness http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddfgWIjZGIM Norway http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7q_Ar5T2LfI Meg Myers -- 'Make a Shadow' (F) . This EP is a twisted, eclectic mix. Prepare for screams and wailing contrasting with some more intimate moments. Think Amy Studt's second 'gothic' album x PJ Harvey x some more insanity. Highlights -- everything, but particularly: Make a Shadow: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-z4sUKWd6Q Heart Heart Head: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xvh_0CuMMtM Desire: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bR5u9jb0PJE Lost in the Trees -- 'Past Life' (M) . Might be the band's strongest album so far. This time more emphasis is placed on the rhythm section, twinkling piano and subtle atmospheric synths. Highlights: Past Life http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7dT_rFnd1o Lady in White http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_f7aRAxaJuk Rites http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHMTnogrhuQ Phantogram -- 'Voices' (F>M) . This electropop duo's second full-length beats their debut, in my opinion. In some places electric and Portisheady, in others dream-poppy, at all times keeping my attention. Highlights: Nothing but Trouble http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98bi0dxJGGc Bill Murray http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWmWSjJqlEg Black Out Days http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0ul-BghOAs Thomas Azier -- 'Hylas' (M) . Dark electropop slightly reminiscent of IAMX and perhaps Depeche Mode. Highlights: Ghostcity http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9dz8pcd_P8 How to Disappear http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rya1BybNBU Nicole Saboune' -- 'Must Exist' (F) . Generally badass mix of post-punk/new wave from this Swedish The Voice (!) contestant. Highlights: Unseen Footage from a Forthcoming Funeral http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Vpg5xaFY6o Win This Life http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FR2YFNa-gWQ Conquer or Suffer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=beJ1BKmKipU The Unbending Trees -- 'Meteor' (M) . Stark chamber pop from Hungary. Ten new songs plus several re-recorded songs tacked on at the end, including You Are a Lover which was covered by Tracey Thorn. Highlights: Devil on Your Shoulder http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlEKbFFa4mU Hello Miss Dawn http://soundcloud.com/recorderhu/the-unbending-trees-hello-miss Ed Harcourt -- 'Time of Dust' (M) . Also male-voiced chamber pop but this time with a bigger, more polished production. Highlights: We All Went Down with the Ship http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtJ0cT2IK2g Come Into My Dreamland http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oj1EqxBdERY Chinawoman -- 'Let's Part in Style' (F) . Usual gloomy Chinawoman fare, with perhaps some more polish in the production. Highlights: Good Times Don't Carry Over http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxKTttEzieE What Was Said http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHSTYlKrQYM Scandinavian Music Group -- 'Terminal 2' (F + a duet) . The band has moved away from the Americana/country sound of their three previous albums, creating several mini-epics which wouldn't have been out of place on a more recent Marillion album (except for the vocals). The singer's voice is as lovely as ever, and while I have little to no idea about the lyrics, Finnish language is like honey to my ears. An engaging listen from start to finish. Highlights: Balladi 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Le4dUb39XnQ Las Vegasin rauniolla http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8kchdlk_xk Iisa -- 'Iisa' (F + a duet) . Another Finnish album, this is the debut solo album by the singer of the band Regina. Just well-made dreamy pop with flourishes from various genres, Highlights: Psykopaati http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ha2tIX8eYLQ Puutarhajuhla http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r537MXep2T4 MarieMarie -- 'Dream Machine' (F) . This album might not have much substance but it's a pure joy to listen to. Sweet (just look at the titles!) electropop + harp and some occasional darker twists to keep things interesting. Highlights: Wild Bees Honey http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHl52CL5KGQ Candy Jar http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8Gju-38tco 20 Steps http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAjanYFv9n4 Need more listens but seem rather good so far: . Kye Kye (F) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9F3leelYZY Trust (M) http://soundcloud.com/artsandcrafts/05-are-we-arc DENA (F) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FT-gGhX_2k0 Owlle (F) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H63mKVY8uOI Dum Dum Girls (F) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDgi2IOQ9oA Lyla Foy (F) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEfG15s9xU8 Bombay Bicycle Club (M +F bv) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAij6noN-HQ Katy B (F) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOboa27SHDE Not convinced about the whole album but some tracks are stellar: . Kate Miller-Heidke -- 'O Vertigo!' (F + 2 duets) Starts off with three amazing tracks but then it's pretty much ballad after ballad which gets a little too much. The album is still streaming here: http://soundcloud.com/cookingvinylau/sets/kate-miller-heidke-o-vertigo/s-xtZ2r Nina Persson -- 'Animal Heart' (F) "Food for the Beast" is great, the rest is alright http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOkVZNV5pnk Shakira -- 'Shakira.' (F + some duets) No spark throughout most of the album. The exception is the lovely "Empire" which for some reason reminds me of Seal? odd. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QapfTGTXbxc Lo-Fang -- 'Blue Film' (M) Highlight: "Look Away" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KJ8sGbosD8 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Mar 2014 20:56:18 -0400 From: FJ Subject: Re: Well, you've done it...
