Today's Subjects: ----------------- Cosmos - 1980 original and the 2014 reboot - music and content [Mike Conn] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 08 Mar 2014 14:50:02 -0500 From: Mike Connell Subject: Cosmos - 1980 original and the 2014 reboot - music and content I am just wondering how many here saw the original Cosmos 13-part series in 1980 - and - got hooked by any of the music in it? It remains to this day my favorite sountrack album (called The Music Of Cosmos), as the show introduced me to several creative artists I had no idea about, most notably Vangelis (a fellow Greek). Plus, I never really paid much attention to classical before the 1980 series, but the show and the soundtrack began my love affair with it. I am certain that I have since purchased at least 100 albums and CDs as a direct result of the show and the music in it. Now, the new Cosmos mini-series premieres this Sunday evening. I look forward to it on three counts...content, music and of course the visuals. One note on the original and the soundtrack - I just love how it blends from "(Depicting) Cranes In Their Nest" Goro Yamaguchi into "Pachelbel's Canon", on headphones it haunts me. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmos:_A_Personal_Voyage THE MUSIC OF COSMOS - (1980) tracklisting Side A Space / Time Continuum * "Movement 3" (from "Symphony to the Powers B" from the album Heaven and Hell) Vangelis * "Symphony No.11 In G Minor ('The Year 1905'), Op.103: The Palace Square (Adagio)" Dmitri Shostakovich (Performed by Leopold Stokowski and the Houston Symphony) * "Alpha" Vangelis Life * "(Depicting) Cranes In Their Nest" Goro Yamaguchi * "Pachelbel's Canon" Johann Pachelbel (Performed by James Galway) * "The Four Seasons: Spring" Antonio Vivaldi * "The Sea Named 'Solaris' (BWV 639)" Johann Sebastian Bach (Performed by Isao Tomita) The Harmony of Nature * "Partita For Violin Solo No. 3 In E, BWV 1006" Johann Sebastian Bach (Performed by Arthur Grumiaux) Side B Exploration * "'Vishnu Symphony No. 19, Op. 217" Alan Hovhaness * "Legacy" Larry Fast * "Russian Easter Festival Overture" Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (Performed by Seattle Symphony) * "Inside The Heart Of The Universe" Toru Takemitsu Cataclism * "Fly...Night Bird" Roy Buchanan * "Beaubourg, Part 2" Vangelis * "The Rite of Spring" Igor Stravinsky (Performed by Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra) Affirmation * "Entends-Tu Les Chiens Aboyer?"
