[Michael Curry ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 4 May 2011 05:51:44 -0800 From: Adam Kimmel Subject: ecto-defining albums It's tough to make a choice between something that can be defined as "ecto-defining" and something ecto you just happen to like a lot. I was trying to stick to the classics, but occasionally I'd drift into "This WILL be an ecto classic!" territory. I'd also like to second Dan Riley's approach -- I mean, I had ecto tendencies before I discovered Ecto, if you know what I mean, and those roots go way back, looking for an indefinable something in the music I was listening to. So, I'll second his early Yes and Genesis, throw in a bit of Pink Floyd (Wish You Were Here) and give a big shout out for Gentle Giant (Free Hand or Interview). I might, however, even go further and mention the unmentionable: Elton John. Now...wait...put those flaming brands down and hear me out. Elton John was the first contemporary music I listened to (before that it was all show tunes and 30s Hollywood musicals) and the first that really struck me. I started with Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (still one of the finest and most consistent double albums) and worked my way backwards, and I can still heartily recommend Madman Across the Water and Tumbleweed Connection as proto-ecto, with even a sneaking vote for the much underrated autobiographical Captain Fantastic album. I'd also, just for my own musically formative period's sake, put in a plug for Dan Fogleburg's Souvenirs, James Taylor's Mud slide Slim (or Fire and Rain) and Carole King's Tapestry as well as -- of course -- something by Peter Hammill, probably The Silent Corner and the Empty Stage, or Over, or X My Heart or even his most recent Thin Air. I can't imagine, however, any of either Elton John's or Peter Hammill's albums (poles apart) being considered ecto-defining. But still.... Yes, it's hard -- I mean, which comes first, Ecto or the ectophile? Is society to blame? Or AM radio? Sorry to blather on, but it's good to see so much activity! It just makes sense. As we gather to admire the wonderous albums we have all mentioned, I feel we all owe a moment of tribute to The One Who Started It All. The one whose five octave vocal range has blown our collective hearts all wide open with awe and wonder. May she return to the trees from whence her art was born and hopefully, someday, grace us once more with her amazing music. Happy, we hardly knew ye, but thank the Maker we all got to share a fair amount of solar orbits together. Your music set us all free, and we are eternally grateful. Happy never found the audience she deserved, but she really appreciated the collective heart she had with us. So I offer a toast (jam optional, bring your instruments) to the most brilliant, talented Singer/Songwriter on the planet who never made it big commercially but remains a true colossus to those of us fortunate enough to have discovered her. Edwina Hayes - Pour Me A Drink. I posted about it here last June and got nary a response, although I did get some with the same post on the Patty Griffin list. I think it fits with some of the others mentioned in this thread. It's a 2008 solo acoustic effort that is quite pleasing to my ears.
