Some like almost all of it. What are the characteristics of a "defining ecto album"? B B B B B Reflect a unique artistry B B B B Tend to be more than a collection of "singles", but somewhat thematically or emotionally linked B B B B Discussed/discovered through ecto list (makes some pre-ecto albums somewhat suspect, but I think many people have gone back and discovered artists like Renaissance and Sandy Denny because of the list) B B B B B Tended to be albums that got stuck in people's record/tape/cd/MP3 players - that became an obsession for some amount of time B B B B B While not exclusively non-mainstream, tend to be more obscure B B B B B B The kind of albums that people define themselves by because they were so much a part of their life for at least some period of time B B B B Albums that stand the test of time B Some others I thought of recently that I haven't seen mentioned (forgive me if they were and I missed them--bee a bit hard to keep up!) Katell Keinig - O Seasons, O Castles Paula Cole - Harbringer Toni Child's - The Woman's Boat Maria McKee - eponymous album Holly Cole - Don't Smoke in Bed, Temptation Victoria Wiliams - Loose Alison Moyet - Voice I was also thinking of the types of modern albums that would define "ecto" and would be included--I haven't seen many albums that listed that have been released in the past decade, but I do think there have been a few that merit inclusion--even though smoe haven't been widely discussed on ecto itself. One I did see-- Bat for Lashes-Fur and Gold, I'd also add: Florence and the Machine - Lungs Lykke Li - Youth Novels Frida Hyvonen - Silence is Wild Anna Ternheim - Halfway to Fivepoints Oh, and thanks for nominating Milla's The Divine Comedy--how could I forget that one! And for pre-ecto albums, I'll second/nominate the following albums: Any Renaissance album (from Prologue up to but not including Camera Camera) Lene Lovich - Stateless The other thing that this thread got me wondering is.... How is ecto doing itself?B Are we growing?B Are we withering?B Are we stable?B What is the subscription rate?B Have we leveled off?B It seemed in the past, back when Happy wasB releasing albums, we'd get occassional bursts of newcomers--we don't seem to have those to look forward to anymore, so what encourages fresh blood to join?B And why do some of remain, some 20ish years later? Anyway, to me, the mailing list has become something like a "warm fuzzy" blanket that comes into my e-mail and reminds me of the like-minded people, friends and great experiences the list has brought me over the years, and across the world.B I read on facebook (of course), that facebook can trigger the same hormones in people as a "hug" does.B Don't know if that is B.S. or not, but that is how ecto has come to feel to me.
