Today's Subjects: ----------------- 2011 so far [Adam Kimmel ] Re: 2011 so far [Tim Jones-Yelvington ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 23 Mar 2011 06:00:05 -0800 From: Adam Kimmel Subject: 2011 so far I'm loathe to make such pronouncements (and annually pour scorn on those who do) but I do believe, even this early in the year, that 2011 is shaping up to be rather marvellous, musically. I mean, apart from the great country-rock that the Decemberists have given us, the very pleasing Anna Calvi debut and the frighteningly good PJ Harvey release, I have just been listening to the contrary, frustrating box of noise that is the new Van der Graaf Generator (okay, not ecto but...crikey, it leaves an impression) and the new Noah and the Whale, which is one joyous slice of thoughtful pop, a phrase I never thought I'd tap out. After the rather maudlin, self-pitying wallow of their last album (a bit like finding a friend has been living in his pyjamas for two weeks and surviving on cigarettes, corn flakes and cheap red wine) this is quite a pleasurable contrast. I've also read that Paul Simon and Robbie Robertson both have albums out on April 11th, Thea Gilmore is working on her "John Wesley Harding" cover album and Carina Round is releasing her Early Winters material (as well as a 10th anniversary vinyl edition of her first album, which I'm less thrilled about)... It's all go, innit? With spring definitely in the air after a particularly dark and dreary winter over here, I'm feeling alarmingly optimistic. This can't possibly last, so I'm off to listen to some Rebecca Black to get a grip ("It's Friday/Friday..." Oh, come on, you all know the words...)
