New PJ Harvey and The Decemberists heading our way shortly -- anyone else know of any imminent ecto-ish releases to watch out for? many thanks to Sarah for the mention of the "Sound of 2011" list, as I was also about to bring up Anna Calvi. I saw her open for Carina Round a year and a half ago, and was mighty intrigued by her moody, eccentric Lynchian sounds, so swore I'd keep an eye/ear out for her. Due to my inability to deal with podcasts or netcasts or summon up the energy to go to gigs these days, I missed her getting so big in the meantime. I've pre-ordered her debut album, out in a couple of weeks, but the Guardian's Guide section last week also gave her a mention, so her Hoxton Hall gig is already sold out. Looks like I missed my window of opportunity to be even smugger and say, "Oooh, I knew her way back when". I'll save that for the inevitable backlash. Addendums to my list of 2010, by the way -- First, apologies for all the typographical nonsense, a result of me writing it in word and then cutting and pasting it into the e-mail in plain text (no, that didn't work). Also a mention to a great discovery from last year, Frank Turner. Thanks -- again - to Mike Gray for this one: Turner is a singer/songwriter with mordant wit to spare, a sort of David Ford/Billy Bragg type. Intelligent, committed stuff. Oh, and did anyone see the brief article by the author, David Mitchell about his hero, Kate Bush in the Guardian over the weekend? "So I just got done listening to the songs on this, and there are a number of artists on the list that might be of interest to the ecto crowd: Clare Maguire -- Fairly straightforward pop-rock, but good. Helps that she's got some muscle to her voice and production (unlike Ellie Goulding, where the production was the whole point) Anna Calvi -- Very much in the Society of Imaginary Friends vein. The song on the list, "Jezebel," is an Edith Piaf cover, pretty well done. Esben and the Witch -- Fuzzy atmospheric spooky rock. Not my thing, could be yours. Warpaint -- All-female pop-rock group with some gorgeous swirly harmonies." Warpaint has gotten a real big amount of press..their track Undertow is gorgeous. Anna Calvi is a big hope of 2011 for me..Jezebel is a single and wont be on the album which is due soon. I've preordered one. Will watch out for Maguire. Over here in Sweden Lykke Li is gearing up for a new album..promising. Anna ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V16 #3 *************************
