The hype is definitely on, with a half page review in the Guardian and even getting a look-in in an article in the same paper entitled "My First song". So, natch, I had to take a listen. Mmmmm....definite class here, class and sophistication and certainly easy listening enough, real late-night stuff, but I'm somewhat unmoved on listening to my first set of songs. I find myself agreeing with the critics (a surprise in itself) in regards to the Karen Carpenter comparison, and I've never been a huge Carpenters fan. To me, she sounds like what Karen Carpenter would sound like if she'd lived and gone on to compose songs while working in an upmarket cocktail lounge. I'll listen a few more times, but something this smooth doesn't isn't usually my cup of tea. (Thus speaks the man who, despite myriad recommendations, never, ever got into Norah Jones, so take mine with a grain of salt). Europop with bits of rap and electronic noodlings. My teeth don't hurt because there are minor keys and clever lyrics. Her inability to pronounce 'R's makes things a little cutesy, but it's always offset with melancholy or bravado. I shouldn't admit that a Max Martin song is currently my favorite, should I? ('Time Machine') Currently $3.99 to download at Amazon. "Dancing On My Own" is a real contender for single of the year. And don't bash Max! He's lasted this long for a reason, which is that he's damn good at what he does. Missteps aside (I still can't believe he thought "If U Seek Amy" was some of his best work ever. Especially since it's a ripoff of a Jessie Malakouti song. But I digress....) - -Sarah On Mon, 22 Nov 2010 16:45:53 -0500, Karen Hester wrote: > Pop pop pop!
