Among some more or less forgettable items there was one gem: a beautiful folky song called 'Hide and Seek' by someone going by a name of Chloe Hall. I loved that song! I never heard of her before, and at the time I wasn't able to find out anything about her - I even wrote to the people behind the 'Girl Zone' asking for info and I remember they actually replied, but they weren't able to tell me anything useful. And so, I eventually gave up thinking it was probably a one-off who'd never do anything else. Fast-forward to a couple of months ago... I finally got around to the task of ripping all of my CD's. That's how I came by the long-forgotten by now 'Girl Zone II', and that's how I remembered my once-favourite song... and just for the heck of it, I typed 'Chloe Hall' into the search box. Imagine my suprise and delight when I got a solid hit: it turns out Chloe Hall did not disappear after all - she went on to make a few records and has an active website at www.chloehall.com.au She is at the moment touring in the UK and posts a video diary on her site that gives a pretty good idea of the music she plays and of the person behind the music: warm and lovely and down to earth. She still does this thing that I suppose fall into the genre of folk. She has a lovely voice. She seems like a nice, gentle person. That's good enough for me these days. She has this cute and bouncy song 'about being single': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rp1D4chN7YI I'm so glad I found her again after all this time. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Nov 2010 10:15:22 -0500 From: Sarah Morayati Subject: Katie Stelmanis's new band Austra ...is absolutely brilliant. It's more electronic (well, more *traditionally* electronic) than her solo album Join Me, so if you don't like that kind of thing, it might not be for you. But if it is, this is massive. Okay, so last month we went to a gig where Katell Keineg opened for Krystle Warren. We'd been introduced to Krystle Warren at the Kate McGarrigle tribute last summer, the one organised by Richard Thompson. She was covering McGarrigles' songs and we were impressed by her deep voice. For my husband, the gig was all about Krystle Warren. But I was very excited also about seeing Katell live. I'd loved O Seasons, O Castles back in the '90s, but I'd never seen her live. Her set was a mixed bag. She was surprisingly disappointing at first. It was just her and her guitar, and the first two songs felt very pedestrian -- and her voice threatened to go off-key a few times. It didn't completely go off-key, but it sounded as if it was going to at any moment. She seemed nervous and perhaps out of practice. I'm not sure how much performing she's been doing lately. However, she started to chat with the audience and her confidence seemed to grow. By the time she reached "Gulf of Araby", she was in fine shape -- and I really enjoyed her performance of that song. But the first few songs weren't that good. I fear she may be a bit out of practice. However, she really came across as a nice person -- very pleasant, very friendly. I hope she's able to perform more regularly, though, and keep what can be fantastic vocal chops in shape. Krystle Warren was excellent. She's a rather short and slim lady, so this huge, deep voice coming out of her seems quite the revelation at first. She's a bit of a folky blueswoman, and, damn, can she play the guitar. I'd been checking her website occasionally to see what she'd been up to (I LOVED Join Us and wanted more), but I guess it had been a while because I didn't know about the new band. Even better, I see they'll be in NYC twice early next month opening for another band! I guess I should say I *tried* to listen to disc 1, but I got quite bored and turned it off. Today I put on disc 2. It seemed to me partly like a Putumayo 'round the world folk album hosted by Natalie Merchant. There was reggae, New Orleans jazz... And other songs sound like they could be on a regular (non-themed) NM album. I found some songs lovely, but I was itchy and kind of bored by the time the last track came on. It's a big project - 26 tracks with different influences and sounds, and extensive liner notes. I doubt most people will love all of it, but I think most people will find things to like. Has anyone made it through the full version of this album and book enough to form an opinion? JoAnn ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V15 #266 ***************************
