I was at the Living Room Friday night which featured: Elk City Emilie Simon Tristen Smoke Fairies and others I didn't stay for. First, apologies to Meth for not being able to come by MPressFest CMJ on Thursday--hope it went well. Now to the review: Elk City has not continued in the direction of their "Los Cruzados," which appears to have been more of a one-off. They have a punk sound and pretty weak songwriting. I wasn't impressed. Emilie Simon took a good while to get set up, and put the evening a whole set behind. Her keyboard sported two appendages, one some kind of effects machine, the other some kind of flat-panel rhythm machine that displayed pulses of light in sync with the beat. She also sported some kind of cyber-sleeve on her left arm, which she tweaked from time to time for vocal effects. This clashed in an interesting way with her strapless dress and black veil. I found her music ecto-friendly, heavy on the electronics but a little on the pop side. It was vaguely as if Happy's upper register were to go pop. Next up was Tristen. Rock band, a little bit of twang. Not really my sort of thing, but fairly good at what they do. Smoke Fairies - just the two women, each on an electric guitar. On the quiet side, which made the background chatter of the venue quite annoying. Beautiful work. The vocal quality reminded me a bit of Loreena McKennitt, but the sensibility is all different -- more like the dark Americana ballads of a band that would open for Cowboy Junkies. It made an interesting impression on me--though it probably shouldn't have--that a band from London would write a song about the Erie Lackawanna. Thanks for recommending them, Neile!
