I sort of liked their debut, didn't care much for their second outing, and almost gave this third album a miss because the cover art is so off-putting. However, the album itself will probably end up as my favourite album this year. I have often played it back to back with Sarah McLachlan's Laws of Illusion which I actually find a bit placid, though certainly better than Afterglow. Both are break-up albums, and lead singer Lauri Kranz' voice occasionally reminds me of Sarah's, but her material is so much stronger this time around. Think Grey Eye Glances around Eventide. The songs are mostly slow and piano-driven, though, and I still marvel at the urgency and raw talent on display here. There's not a weak track on this disc. Check The Letting Go, Maybe Finland, and Liar. Also, I'm smitten by Moroccan singer HINDI ZAHRA who recently released her debut album HANDMADE. I'll label her as an alternative singer/songwriter rather than a world music artist (or 'the new Norah Jones'. Sigh) She definitely has her own sound somewhere between Taken By Tree's East of Eden and Jesca Hoop's Hunting My Dress. Very laid back and playful. I find it impossible to resist opener Beautiful Tango: http://www.hindi-zahra.com/en/galeries.php I agree on everything that Amy wrote about SALLY SELTMANN'S HEART THATS POUNDING the other day: http://www.blog.collectedsounds.com/?p=8365 It's just a really charming and happy album chockablock with catchy tunes. I've recently discovered Norwegian singer MARIA MENA. She apparently has a dedicated following, and I should probably have listened to her music long ago, but it took a beautiful cover with the singer in an extravagant dress to grab my attention. I'm not sure whether she's been mentioned here on Ecto or not, but her voice is just stunning. Her songwriting has to mature a bit, though. Here's my favourite track off her latest album CAUSE AND EFFECT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBH-QbN5BcQ&ob=av2n Finally: Has anybody listened to the new albums by Azure Ray, Stars, Nellie McKay , Amanda Palmer, Blonde Redhead, and K.T. Tunstall? I haven't yet - thanks to Snow and Voices. "Cause and Effect" was her breakthrough album in Poland, thanks to "All This Time" becoming a massive hit over here ("I'm in Love" and the "I Was Made for Lovin' You" cover got quite a lot airplay too). I wasn't immediately grabbed by that album, only after a while I started appreciating it. My favourites would be "Belly Up" (the lead single in Norway, where it hit #4) and "Self-Fulfilling Prophecy." I have listened to the KT Tunstall "Tiger Suit" CD and am quite impressed by it. "(Still a) Weirdo," "Fade Like a Shadow" and "Push That Knot Away" are really catchy - the former one is fun to sing along to, and the latter two are a pair of bouncy, uptempo tunes. "Come On, Get In" is classic KT. "Madame Trudeaux" reminds me of Yeah Yeah Yeahs. "Uummanaq Song," "Lost" and "Difficulty" both have great build-ups. The album features some amazing synths and strings. I think this is my favourite KT CD so far.
