Today's Subjects: ----------------- I wish Noe Venable would stop writing songs [Karen Hester Subject: I wish Noe Venable would stop writing songs ... until she records all the existing ones. Two brand new tunes, written last weekend, played tonight! One had a simple soaring melody and was about a star being born and possibly dying at the same time. The other was The Dream Horse, about a dream about a horse. The horse canters through clover and symbolizes Freedom, which was a bit much for me. I like clover and 'cantering' is a good word so perhaps I need hypnotism to remove my bias that songs-must-be-about-cool-things-or-somewhat-ironic. References to Freedom, however, are inexcusable. Kristin Hersh tells a story about being backstage listening to all these neo-hippies playing "we shall all be free" songs, and sniggering, and then having it pointed out to her that she sing that line too (though borrowed from her hippie dad Dude). Fortunately Noe's husband Eric recognizes that this is a dreadful situation and agrees that the songs should come out somehow. Our man on the inside. Tour Dates in the Northwest this weekend I got a call yesterday from my friend, the musician John Doyle. He was scheduled to do a tour with Karan Casey and she is now unable to come and he asked if I could do the dates with him. We start in Washington state on Saturday and the dates are posted above and at www.susanmckeown.com. Feis Teamhra Last week I returned from Ireland where I enjoyed a wonderful afternoon on the Hill of Tara in the company of Paul Muldoon, Seamus Heaney, Michael Longley and Colm ToibC-n, and musicians Aidan Brennan and Laoise Kelly for our third annual Feis Teamhra: http://www.indymedia.ie/article/97505&comment_limit=0&condense_comments=false#comment272650 (You might need to scroll upwards for more photos of the event and the poets) Songs from the East Village Over the past year I've been working on two albums and they are both about to be released. The first is Songs from the East Village, a world music album with a difference. My daughter attends the East Village Community School, a wonderfully diverse, creative place where I discovered some wonderful musicians among the parents. In getting to know the other families I was intrigued with the stories of the families and the many countries from which they had come. I came up with the idea for a world music album that would delve into the cultures represented at our school and the parent's committee approved it. I spent some months last year working in the studio to produce the album. I brought in some parents who were musicians and some friends who contributed their talents to lay down tracks in arrangements for the songs. Then I brought in the kids. We recorded them as a group for some of the choruses but I brought many of them to the studio individually to feature them individually. Now it's finished and will be released on September 20 (it's already available on CD Baby and iTunes). You can hear some of the songs at www.myspace.com/evcs The album is being launched with an event at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum on Monday at 6:30pm. Those of you who are in New York are welcome to attend this free event which will feature some musical moments. http://www.tenement.org/vizcenter_events.php Newly Updated Website I'll write again soon with more information about my own album but you can go already to the newly updated website (thanks to Julia Reinhart) www.susanmckeown.com to read about it and watch a short video made by my friend Maria Rosenblum. Cheers, Susan ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Sep 2010 22:41:50 -0400 From: Paul Blair Subject: Re: I wish Noe Venable would stop writing songs The show was absolutely brilliant tonight. In addition to the new songs Karen mentioned, Noe sang a song titled "Be Like a Bird," with music by Arthur Frackenpohl and lyrics based on a poem by Victor Hugo. More info here: http://www.kith.org/journals/jed/2004/04/24/1984.html With regard to the "Dream Mare" song, when I heard it I thought it could have been written by Happy. It was something about the way the music went; everything fit together in a Happy Rhodes sort of way. I wonder how we can get Happy to cover it...
