I was wondering how people felt about the idea of "The One". I know that other artists I love have often come close but never quite done "The One", while for me Jonatha Brooke's "Back in the circus" and Patty Griffin's "Impossible Dream" and Indigo Girl's "Swamp Ophelia" all fall into this bracket. And, while most people in the known universe would go for REM's "Automatic for the People", I'd go for "Green" as being the first, for me, where it all came together. Too often, however -- and this frightens me -- this is the ripening that precedes a gradual OVERripening and decline. For me, neither Griffin, REM or the Indigo Girls produced albums that measured up to the ones I've mentioned (although the Indigo Girls came damned close with "Shaming of the Sun" for me before the rot set in). On the other hand, Peter Hammill has, over a career that spans 40 years, managed to produce two or even three that I'd fight for. Does this make sense? While asking questions -- whatever happened to Heidi Berry? I was never a fan, but heard her "Washington Square" on a mix I'd made the other day and began to wonder. Adam K (surprised that Patty Griffin's been touring with Robert Plant and that I had no idea. Great pairing, though). ____________________________________________________________ TRY FREE IM TOOLPACK at http://www.imtoolpack.com/default.aspx?rc=if5 Capture screenshots, upload images, edit and send them to your friends through IMs, post on TwitterB., FacebookB., MySpaceb", LinkedInB. b FAST! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Sep 2010 21:10:33 -0700 From: Neile Graham Subject: New feature on The Ectophiles' Guide Hey all-- Just wanted to give you the heads up on something new (*gasp*, I know) on The Ectophiles' Guide. Thanks to JoAnn (compilation) and Damon (programming) we now have Best of the Year compilation lists. http://www.ectoguide.org/best These are compilations of the lists posted to ecto at year's end. We plan to make other lists in the future to add to these (heads up, I will be asking for nominations and votes in basically the same way we do year's bests). The idea is to help highlight some of the remarkable stuff reviewed on The Guide and on ecto. My immediate ideas are: * lost gems--great stuff that isn't available anymore (like Ingrid Karklin's Red Hand, Kym Brown's Pygmalion) * sole-release gems (like Susan Court's High Relief, Sandra Lockwood's Shell) * ecto-est albums (the classics that made people goddesses) * best of each of the artist genres we list * maybe reprise the various voices lists we've done (or use the old ones!) But please let me know your ideas. We can do lists of artists, albums, songs...anything that helps highlight things lost in the mass of material on the site--we've heading towards 1,100 artists now. Thanks, all. - --Neile - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham .... neile@sff.net/@zipcon.com ... www.sff.net/people/neile Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal ........ www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines Editor, The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ........... www.ectoguide.org Workshop Administrator, Clarion West ................ www.clarionwest.org ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Sep 2010 22:32:07 -0600 From: neal copperman Subject: Folk music from Warmia I'm enjoying some video clips from Hoboud, an oddball folk fusion group from Warmia, a region of northeast Poland "where the local culture has been forgotten almost completely". www.myspace.com/huboud Enjoy! neal ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V15 #216 ***************************
