I have put up a bunch of photos including Happy at The Tin Angel in Philly 1996, Happy in Troy 1997 and Happy in Woodstock 1997. I'm getting a little mixed up on my Philly dates: Meth, Woj, Jeff, were we in Philly for 2 days and 4 sets in 96 or 97? I took photos at all three venues and Vickie n Chris took video at Philly. I have screencaps from that video up, too. Someone in direct contact with Vickie: please let her know and ask her to write to me at my reply address if my giving of credit is inadequate. I have the only photos of Troy and had to smuggle the camera in as the venue had a 'no cameras' policy. Needing to be quick and having recently lost the in-camera light meter caused my results to be less than perfect. I tried to bracket the exposures and after the fact I have done some digital processing. At Tinker Creek Cafe, Woodstock I also was less than perfect. Spots of white light in the middle of intense reds and underexposed in my outdoor shots, but, hey! They are the only game in town. 8-) Scans were done by a friend with a new scanner and he noticed fingerprints on the glass after doing a few dozen and did not want to do them again. This has caused some cropping that is not consistant pic to pic. If anyone knows how I can fiddle with my myspace page to make the albums the main thing one sees when arriving *please* let me know!! I am at myspace as I have had fewer problems with photos there than at facebook. Take a peek at the other stuff, too and leave some comments. Before I got the HR stuff up I had 47 visits and no comments. There is a Kerry White (with no "r") who is a left coast comedian and maybe there were fans looking for him. bye, KrW I'm Peter Pan! What's wrong with my back? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Sep 2010 00:10:50 -0800 From: Adam Kimmel Subject: Thea Gilmore - "Murphy's Heart" Thea released her newest, "Murphy's Heart" earlier this week. Now, I'm a Thea fan but I like to think I still strive towards some sort of objectivity, for instance making known my disappointment at "Harpo's Ghost" her 2006 release and attempting to NOT become the sort of starry-eyed fan who says "It's her BEST ALBUM EVER" at every release. "Murphy's Heart", however, really, really is...her BEST ALBUM EVER, and I'm not ashamed to say so. It's certainly the most immediately engaging of her albums -- even "Liejacker" from a couple of years ago took a while to work its smokey charms -- because there's just so much going on here. From the funky brass of the opener, "This Town", to the sweeping melancholy of "Automatic Blue" and "Due South", the pulse-racing fervor of "Not Alone" and the swooning, heart-breaking romanticism of "That's How the Love Gets In" and "Wondrous Thing", not to mention the leering stompalong of "Teach Me to Be Bad" and the weird, utterly un-Thea-like "Jazz Hands", it just bristles with inventiveness, and her voice just gets better and better. Crikey just reading what I've written and I keep thinking, "My god, I've become what I most feared: One of THOSE fans". But it really, really is an exceptional album, and I can't recommend it enough. I got the limited "Deluxe" box set, which comes with a series of postcards with art on one side and lyrics from the songs on the other. It was also supposed to have a bonus track, "Your Voice" (written for the elections over here and available on YouTube) but apparently there was a mistake at the pressing plant and it didn't happen. Thea's angry about that, but it's hard to care -- I'd hate an added bonus track to spoil this kind of experience: When "Wondrous Thing" (which should be a "first dance" number for weddings everywhere) ends, it would be a shame to alter the mood you're left with. So, yeah, take this with a grain of salt and try to ignore the deranged happiness that suffuses every word I've written. But buy this album. If it doesn't put her on the map, then the earth doesn't deserve its place in the heavens. Oh, I can't wait until mine arrives. I just ordered the deluxe edition yesterday. Thanks for the review, Adam. Btw, I think that I got busy and didn't write about having seen Vienna Teng last month in London at Bush Hall. It was a good gig, despite the fact that the expected sound tech didn't show up -- at the very last minute, a substitute arrived, which is why doors were late. (Vienna explained all of this as an apology for making us wait outside longer than expected.) The sound was great, so maybe they should hire this person permanently. It was Vienna with Alex Wong -- first time I'd seen them together, and I hope it's not the last. I picked up their live CD that night. Ellen, who is planning to see Rachael Sage (and Meth maybe!) this Saturday in London. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Sep 2010 13:55:24 -0400 From: "Michael Quinn" Subject: RE: Thea Gilmore - "Murphy's Heart" Yes! Thank you Adam. I've got my copy on order and this is My most anticipated release of the year so I'm even more stoked after reading your review. Can't wait to hear this one! Pity Rheauses3rd party shops exclusively instead of selling directly from her website or a service like Bandcamp but oh well. I read your email this morning when I got out of bed and by the time I'd walked the dog and gotten dressed, the album had been purchased from iTunes and downloaded to my iPod. My first play through the album was a few hours ago and it sounds great. jeff n.p. maladjusted, morrissey n.r. rat girl, kristin hersh ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Sep 2010 21:44:00 -0700 From: "Bill Mazur" Subject: RE: Live Happy Pics Really cool pix Kerry!
