I've been looking for a topic besides shameless self-promotion to get back into posting, and this just dropped into my mailbox: The AFM ( American Federation of Musicians) is circulating a petition to support Senate bill S.1451, which has provisions to require the FAA to streamline procedures and ease rules for carrying musical instruments on airplanes. Whether or not you are a musician, I know that the Ectophiles will largely support such a measure, and I encourage everyone to visit the AFM page and sign up for this petition; it would allow musicians to put instruments in overheads without relying on the sympathies of the airline attendants, or risking having to cargo it, if the plane is full. Please weigh in on this, and show your support; we all want our musicians to be able to travel without the fear of a damaged instrument. http://www.afm.org/departments/legislative-office/carrying-instruments-on-air planes In other news, my old high school friend from Oxford UK, Roger Springall has strangely ended up in the same locale as me; we connected recently after something like 40 years. Roger owns Caffe Trieste, San Jose; Trieste was the very first San Francisco espresso house, and is legendary for its coffees and also its entertainment. Roger is doing a great job of promoting the spot, and has a broad and eclectic variety of musical entertainment on as many nights as he can, ranging from San Jose Opera nights, to Dixieland Jazz, all the way through to Celtic, Brazilian, World Music, and modern cafe-style unplugged or semi-plugged performers. It's a great cafe venue with really nice acoustics, thanks to a mezzanine and very high ceilings, located in Downtown San Jose, and offers great snack foods, Trieste coffees, and imported beers and wines. I would encourage any local fuzzies to go and check it out for the music and vibe, and definitely recommend that performers contact Roger if they are interested in playing there to an appreciative and warm crowd. No money can be paid at this time, as they are still building their business, but you will be 'fed and watered', and people tip well ( Someone left a $100 bill in my tip jar when I last played there!) You can of course, sell CDs there as well, and the local press often drop in to listen; we got a couple of paragraphs in the San Jose Mercury News when columnist Sal Pizarro learned that Roger and I were old school pals who'd found each other again after all that time. If you're interested in performing, I'd suggest you contact Roger directly via email : rogerspringall (AT) yahoo.com; tell him Phil sent 'ya :) He will be delighted to discuss with you, and is a very warm and thoughtful host. Here's the recent calendar: http://www.caffetriestesj.com/Aug10.html And now for the the shameless part: I will be performing solo there next month, Saturday Sept 11th, as Phil Hudson and his Imaginary Friends, and also likely be sitting in later on some songs with my friends Better With Ed. I play solo versions of my originals, and a number of largely modified covers, and BWE does both originals and excellent covers that they too have modified, so as to 'own' these versions. I hope we see you there, it will be an action packed evening and a lot of fun. I hope some of you can make it down. All the best, and don't forget that petition. Also, not sure where to put it.b Mark MacKenzie ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Aug 2010 20:24:36 -0400 From: Paul Blair Subject: Re: Upcoming Zazie 49 songs! Hooray! Glad to hear of new Zazie. I'm liking "Avant l'Amour," which is what's in the player on the homepage. I think it might appeal to Tori Amos fans too. It seems like just about everyone has covered Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah in one form or another... looking through youtube I find a few good ones, and some not so good ones. I'm a bit partial to this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJET66ee3Pk So who's versions do you all prefer? - --------------------------------------------------------------------- Web mail provided by NuNet, Inc.
