[Paul Jensen ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 6 Aug 2010 15:14:22 -0400 From: Karen Hester Subject: Live in NYC Thursday Robyn sang 4 songs to simple keyboard accompaniment at Borders. What a sweet voice, whispery yet clipped and precise. She did some cute mock dancing to the missing beats. I wouldn't have minded a drum machine, but it was fun hearing the songs pared down. 'Hang with me', 'Dancing on my own', 'Show me love' and something else. The first Prospect Park, Celebrate Brooklyn performer of the night was Holly Miranda with a great band. They're loud live compared to the gentler atmosphere of her album. The final song was written about Prop 8 and they were happy to be able to perform it in such celebratory circumstances. Miranda's friends came on stage to sing the simple choral part, and then the guitars went unhinged. Yey. Joan as Police Woman has a couple songs I like but they're at the edge of her oeuvre - most of the music she played last night was bland funk-less soul-less slow lounge r'n'b to my ears. Is she popular because she's good at this wallpaper or because she's white and dresses kinda hip? Metric were fun and loud with Emily Haines running around like mad, like one of those energetic teenagers who lives on sugar and caffeine. Standard set-list with Fantasies stuff and great noisy versions of 'Dead disco' and 'Monster hospital' and acoustic 'Combat baby' etc. No Twilight song!
