The Empire State Building visible behind me. The view would have been better if the stage were positioned so that the audience was facing the river, but maybe the musicians enjoyed the view. Beth took the stage with guitar, said hi to the crowd and something about feeling like she was in prison. She played "Someone's Daughter," repeating an 8-note pattern on guitar. Then she introduced a guy, Sam, on banjo and background vocals. "She Cries Your Name" with both Beth and Sam on guitars. Just before beginning "Concrete Sky" she said that she hasn't played this song in years. It was a heartbreaking rendition, a feeling I never got from the album version. Plus there was a beautiful sky to look at while she played. Very pale blue, bright sun behind a set of clouds. Beth then introduced Thomas Bartlett to play piano. The trio did "Paris Train" with Sam on banjo. It was a bit strange without the electronic atmospherics, almost like a country-western pub version, especially on the choruses. The verses were still pulsing, and the ending really worked, maybe only because I'd gotten used to the sound. It was quiet and strong, had a certain power. Beth played "Best Bit" solo, then a new song, currently called "Candles" or "Angles" or "Tangles" or something. It was a slower song. Darker, haunting. Bartlett returned to the piano. "Shadow of a Doubt." "Pieces of Sky" was performed with just voice and piano. Beth seemed bothered by noise from helicopters flying overhead at a few points during the show. She had a very cute, delicate, kind of shy way of saying "Thank you" between songs. "Safe in Your Arms" was introduced as another silly song, played as guitar/piano/voice trio. She talked about football while tuning her guitar and said she sings on Sam's album. "Shopping Trolley" was played as a guitar duo. Then Beth went to the piano, said "This is the meanest song I ever wrote" and started to play "Worms." She said she had sat down to play it earlier in the day then said to herself, "I can't play that. It's horrible." After that she just had to play it, just to laugh. The trio played a gorgeous version of "Central Reservation," maybe the most beautiful song of the night. "Whenever." A lullaby she wrote for her little girl. "Sugar Boy," a bit too fast. The backup disappeared and Beth introduced a cover, saying it's her most-played song (on iTunes?), and played "Ooh Child." "Stolen Car" played solo with guitar. "Blood Red River" as a trio, introduced by saying they rehearsed a song earlier in tribute to the river, that it sounded similar to the last song as they're all written around the same two chords. It's a song I've always had a bit of a love/hate relationship with, but in the park, naked, it was beautiful. The set ended with "Feel to Believe." A really enjoyable set. Antibalas - Castle Clinton, Battery Park, 7/22 I got there too late for a free ticket, so I couldn't actually go inside Castle Clinton and didn't actually *see* the band. But I found a nice spot on the grass nearby and I sure got to listen. And the sound was surprisingly good from where I was. I wasn't alone either; there were other people dancing and enjoying the music. Which was excellent. Upbeat, danceable Afrobeat music. I don't think any of the songs lasted less than 10 minutes as they'd just jam on and on, which seemed just fine by all around. I'd never heard them before though I'd heard *of* them, but I plan to check out their recordings and would definitely go see (hopefully see!) them again. Sheryl Crow - Central Park, 7/23 This wasn't a full concert, but part of Good Morning America's summer concert series. My sister got VIP tickets from the Young Survivors Coalition, an organization that supports young women with breast cancer. VIP apparently means you get to stand in the mosh pit in front of the stage. Non-VIPs get to sit in the bleachers further back. Since we arrived around 6 am, we were at the very front of the pit, almost dead center, and we were shown on tv. Everything was very staged. The audience was told exactly when to turn to the camera and wave and look excited. There was supposed to be a trivia segment and an opportunity for the crowd to win prizes, but this seemed to be abandoned due to time. So only one trivia question was asked: The name of Sheryl's new album is "One Hundred Miles From ______". Answer: Memphis. The band (keyboard, guitar, 2 background vocalists, trumpet, and sax) came out for sound check, and everyone sounded in fine form. They played "Summer Day," the new single; "Everyday Is a Winding Road;" and another track from the new album. They also recorded "bumpers," short bits of some of her other hits like "If It Makes You Happy," I assume for use around commercial breaks. Everything had a blues sound I really enjoyed, and "Summer Day" sounded better than I thought it would based on the iTunes clip. I thought Sheryl was holding back a bit during the sound check, saving her voice, but she seemed to perform the songs pretty much the same way during the actual "concert." Overall it was a lot of fun though. I would love to go to Sheryl's Radio City show with Brandi Carlile, but the ticket prices are too steep. Oh well. The Wailin' Jennys - Madison Square Park, 7/28 This was another fun show, though the Jennys have mellowed some. Not sure if that has to do with growing older and starting families or the addition of Heather Masse, the third woman to hold the third Jennys spot. At any rate, they played a good show in the park with upright bass, drums, banjo, accordion, ukulele, and Jeremy Penner (who's also on their live album) on violin and mandolin. They started off with a new Heather song, then did "Beautiful Dawn," "Arlington," "Bring Me Li'l' Water, Silvy," and "Deeper Well." Then "Born in the Leaves" (or "Sweet Morning Leaves?), a new Heather song written after being a doula for her sister. "Begin" got an introduction about worry, similar to what's on the live album. That was followed by "Glory Bound" with the audience doing the "Hallelujah" chorus and "Motherless Child," which I liked better here than on the live album. Another new song, "Away But Never Gone," this one written by Nicky on ukulele after learning a friend had passed away and while pregnant with twin boys. "Pants," a song they "love to sing to the babies," was written by "baby daddy and sound engineer" Grant Johnson and sounded like something the Nields would do these days. It was very cute. I especially liked the line "Sweaters are like wearing a hug." They then did "Cherry Blossom," a new Andrews Sisters-style song and "Last Goodbye," the first happy love song Nicky has written. They ended with "One Voice," encouraging the audience to sing along. For an encore they did "Storm Coming," a gospel song written by Ruth, a cappella with hand claps and foot stomps. The Swell Season - Prospect Park, 7/30 This was the biggest disappointment, only because I really wanted to see the show and ended up not really getting to see or even hear it. A friend and I got there around 7, and it was so crowded we were far back on the lawn it wasn't even grass at that point but wood chips. When the band started we couldn't see anything, but we could hear pretty well. Glen Hansard on guitar and vocals and Marketa Irglova on piano and vocals, of course, and they seemed to have about 3 backup musicians - drums/percussion and I'm not sure what else, maybe more guitars. I thought the set would be pretty low-key, indie folk-pop type stuff, but a lot of the songs were surprisingly aggressive (I mean that in a good way). Glen was quite fierce at times on both vocals and especially guitar. From what I could hear, it seemed I was missing a damn good show. I hope they'll return to New York and I'll be able to see them properly next time around. JoAnn ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V15 #189 ***************************
