I found this list by accident, listening to music on line, discovered Happy and wanted to see if she was still performing. I had also been looking for some venue online to find out about live music, so it is really fabulous to hear about the upcoming shows. I'm in DC but am also in NY fairly often. Are there any DC area folks about on the list and would they want to hear about DC shows? Going to see the Swell Season at Rams Head live in Baltimore Saturday, Lilith next Tue and possible Frazey Ford at the Iota in Arlington on Sunday nite if I can muster the energy. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jul 2010 10:28:03 -0400 From: Karen Hester Subject: Re: NYC concerts this week Damn, sorry I missed the Wailin' Jennys. Even stupider, I probably put it up on the wiki. I'll be at The Swell Season but not sure if I'll be inside or sitting outside with Mica Pants the Leaky Puppy. Saturday night I'll go to Sonic Youth, also at Prospect Park. Not sure about St Vincent because I hate Summerstage - the queues, the lack of sight-lines, the surly security. It's churlish to complain about free shows, but that's my least fav venue for popular events. Next week - Salt N Pepa for free! Metric, Joan the Police Woman and Holly Miranda for free! The XX for free! Robyn for free! Should I have bought tickets to Arcade Fire.... Do you all back up your files? If so, how often? If a CDr is used how long should it take? If not, why not? The store I bought it from sold me Kapersky Anti-virus. I just read on a troubleshooting page that I have both Kapersky and Windows Defender running and having 2 run at once slows down the computer. Which one should I shut down? Think the store had a vested interest in Kapersky? When I reboot and then go on on-line the dial-up process pauses to state that no anti-virus has been detected. I always click on 'continue dialing'. What might cause this? Both Kapersky and Defender say the system is clean. Thanks, bye, KrW I'm Peter Pan! I'm perpetually young!! OW!! Most people I've known over the years never back-up their files, probably because computer memory is now HUGE, and would take so many CDRs and so much time, but this Ecto group may differ. :) > The store I bought it from sold me Kapersky Anti-virus. There is a lot to be said for Kaspersky's specifications, and some folks love Kaspersky... but some hate Kaspersky, some have even said Kaspersky ruined many of their files. I tried Kaspersky's free VirusScan product a few times but it had far too many "false positives" for me. > I just read on a troubleshooting page that I have both > Kapersky and Windows Defender running and having 2 run > at once slows down the computer. Having two AV systems running at the same time will conflict with each other, but you are *not* running two AV programs: 1. Kaspersky is Anti-Virus 2. Defender is Anti-Spyware And if you wish, you can (usually) have multiple Anti-Spyware programs, but multiple Anti-Virus is never suggested. > Which one should I shut down? In this case, neither one, they do not conflict... but if you still want to shut one program down, keep Kaspersky running: 1. Anti-Virus is more important than Anti-Spyware 2. Defender is not really a great Anti-Spyware anyway > When I reboot and then go on on-line the dial-up process > pauses to state that no anti-virus has been detected. > I always click on 'continue dialing'. What might cause this? I have no idea, perhaps it's HP reassuring you that all is OK, does your HP documentation talk about this? > Both Kapersky and Defender say the system is clean. It seems both are confirming what your HP PC is saying. - -- John ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jul 2010 21:25:53 -0400 (EDT) From: Bernie Mojzes Subject: Re: OT: Ecto-wiki: Computers For backups, I use an external hard drive. You can get a 1 TB external drive for $60-80 from buy.com, and of course you'll likely have local places that you can price things out at. They plug in with a USB cable. I use a mac rather than a PC, and macs have a built-in backup software called "time machine" which allows me to restore to the last "good date" if I have a hard drive failure, or whatever. I don't know what the equivalent options are for PCs, but perhaps someone on this list might know. If such software ends up difficult to find, or is expensive, you can always just manually copy the files you want to back up onto the external drive.
