Hi Kerry - Way back in 2005-2006, you bought some CDs from my store, CD Baby. (EMILY BEZAR: Angels' Abacus, EMILY BEZAR: Four Walls Bending, and 94 others. Remember?) So you might be interested in my new free projects to help musicians: (snip) They're all free, open-source, and non-commercial (except MuckWork), so I'm not emailing you for any business reason. But since we've emailed in the past, I thought I should let you know what's new. I sold CD Baby two years ago, so this is the last time you'll hear from me, unless you reply back or click those links. Though if you do reply, please let me know what's going on with you (really!), in case I can help in any way, and to keep this from being a one-sided conversation. :-) Thanks! For obvious reasons, I will be there at Best Buy on Friday. :) NYC folk should also plan to come see Rachael do a full-on preview of the show we're bringing to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Here are the details: Wednesday, August 4 at 7:30 pm Rockwood Stage 2 (their beautiful new bigger nicer space next door) 196 Allen Street, NY ONLY US PERFORMANCE of Rachael Sage's new stage show, "Stop Me If I'm Kvetching..." featuring an opening set by special guest Seth Glier. Expect tunes both old, new, and improvised on-the-spot; lots of audience participation; Yiddish lessons; and general zaniness. Rachael will be accompanied by Quinn on drums, Stephen Katz on cello, Ryan Hommel on guitar, Seth Glier on various tchotchkes, and there may be some other surprise special guests, too. (And if you're in Edinburgh, are planning to go to the Fringe, or know anyone who is, Rachael will be doing the show each night from August 15 through the 30th at 10:45 pm at the C Central Cabaret Bar on North Bridge, right in the center of town. Details here: http://www.edfringe.com/whats-on/music/stop-me-if-i-m-kvetching) Meredith :) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Jul 2010 17:25:08 -0400 From: JoAnn Whetsell Subject: RE: NYC concerts this week Hey Meredith, I look forward to seeing you on Friday. Includes 2 or 3 songs from each of her 6 major studio albums, plus a striking rendition of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy." THE WAILIN JENNYS LIVE AT THE MAUCH CHUNK OPERA HOUSE (2009) I absolutely love the intense rendition of "Deeper Well" that opens this album. Love, love, love it. Can listen to it over and over again. But then they go into a slow a cappella version of "Summertime," a song I will admit I have never liked. Things pick up with a series of songs (traditionals, covers, and originals) that sound like standard Jennys fare. The energy level meanders up and down a bit, but overall the middle section is strong. I particularly like "Racing With the Sun." "Motherless Child" and "Calling All Angels" (yes, Jane Siberry's song) slow things down again. I find the phrasing a bit strange in these songs which keeps me from loving them, though the chorus of "Angels" is gorgeous. The album ends with a lovely version of "One Voice." Jeremy Penner's violin and mandolin is great, providing some of my favorite moments of the album. So, not a perfect album (this is a recording of one August 2008 show, and what show ever is perfect?), but overall one worth listening to. VIENNA TENG & ALEX WONG THE MOMENT ALWAYS VANISHING (2010) Vienna's first live album, recorded in December 2009 while touring as a duo with Alex Wong, is a lovely addition to her collection of releases. Of the 24 tracks, 14 are songs while the remaining 10 are banter between Vienna and Alex and between Vienna and the audience. The easy camaraderie that I've seen them express on stage comes alive. The whole album feels very intimate and makes you believe you're in the audience or the musicians are in your living room. And the music is wonderful. Half the songs are pulled from Inland Territory, while 5 are from her three previous albums, and 2 are new (Alex sings lead vocals on one of these). All the banter is recorded as separate tracks, which makes them easy to skip if you want. I usually listen to the album straight through at home but have only the music tracks on my iPod. The album is available on iTunes and Amazon.com, as well as Vienna's website where you can select from three different packages depending on your budget and interest in extras like songs, videos, photos, and essays. THE INDIGO GIRLS STARING DOWN THE BRILLIANT DREAM (2010) Its been 13 years since I saw the Indigo Girls play Lilith Fair NJ in 1997. 15 years since they released the double live CD 1200 Curfews. Back then they had 5 full-length albums (including their three greatest) of songs to choose from. Since then theyve released an additional 6 studio albums. Which means that for Staring Down the Brilliant Dream they had 11 studio albums and 25 years of music to choose from. For the most part they chose well. Their most recent work is best represented, with 17 of the 31 tracks coming from their 4 most recent albums. There are also 2 covers (a great version of Dont Think Twice, Its All Right with Brandi Carlile and a not-quite-as-winning Wild Horses with Michelle Malone). Its a love project for fans part live album, part career retrospective with backstage and concert photos of the Girls and guests and notes on each song, about its evolution or the particular recording. I could quibble with certain things starting the album with Heartache for Everyone, one of the worst songs Amys ever written; the Girls-glorifying essay by Holly Crenshaw; the lack of banter except for an obligatory Thanks yall at the end of songs, the complete absence of Rites of Passage But theres too much joy here, too much to celebrate to bother focus on relatively minor complaints. The Girls are more energetic here than theyve been on recent albums. Theres a rousing rendition of Closer to Fine, a song which is quite old but never stale. Other highlights are Tether, the closest they get to rocking out; Fugitive and Prince of Darkness with prominent piano; and a revitalized Kid Fears with Trina Meade doing the original Michael Stipe part. Even Fly Away, which is pretty sleepy on record, sounds lovely here. Its, of course, too early to tell, but I wouldnt be surprised to find myself still listening to this album 15 years from now.
