I second Neile. Here's the Tender Coming was my favourite album of last year and their two previous albums (as Rachel Unthank and the Winterset) are brilliant as well. Rachel Unthank's little sister Becky is more prominently featured on their latest album, though, and I love her voice. She sounds a bit like Natalie Merchant. I love their harmonies, their accent, and their mix of traditional and contemporary songs. I basically listen to them all the time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Usw_j8jvfNQ&feature=channel (it's Becky singing in the beginning)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmhACB1ZPQM And my favourite song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bRR6DVWEUM&feature=related All best,Leonora "If you always do what interests you, at least one person is pleased" (Katherine Hepburn) www.leonorachristinaskov.com > From: neile@zipcon.com > Subject: Re: Who knows The Unthanks? > Date: Mon, 28 Jun 2010 18:32:34 -0700 > To: ecto@smoe.org > > Hi, Paul-- > > I haven't had time to get an entry up for them, but they've become > one of my favourite bands. Hi, I saw them live at a lovely little club in Reading. It was a good night. Devon Sproule, who had been touted in the British media not long before that gig, was opening for them and also was excellent. We loved the Unthanks show. Now, that was still when Belinda O'Hooley was with them; we haven't seen the new formation yet. This Saturday, we're off to the same Reading venue to see The Trembling Bells. Oh, oh, oh. A couple of weeks ago we went to the Kate McGarrigle tribute in London, which was tear-jerkingly good. Very good. Except for Linda Thompson's solo, which was embarrassingly week; she kept missing notes. A new discovery at that gig was Krystle Warren, who apparently has toured with Martha Wainwright. What a deep, velvet-clad voice Warren possesses! And I'd never seen Martha Wainwright live before. She is soooo theatrical and I really adore her voice. Things are starting to pick up in general - just slowly... Hotel Cafe has been facing some huge issues. Hopefully, they will be resolved. A few sports bars moved into the same block and the already limited parking shot up to... $20.00. You really cannot find parking outside of the lots. Parking was $7 to $10 $20 is a drink and a CD. Lots of people flat out refuse to pay $20 to park. So, they are losing customers or people buying drinks or artists aren't selling so many CD's. Not good and hopefully they can work out something with a parking lot or I think their days may be numbered. Room 5 on La Brea is remodelling their stage and will easily be the best little listening room in southern california. stay tuned. Sunset blvd....the only scene it had was tired run of the mill rockers from wherever....and a million band names of marquees that you will never see again....kinda like the land of garage bands, sort of...but the best of garage bands. In otherwords, it was so tired and boring!!! Oh, and Paris Hilton and gang got kicked out and that helped a ton to make it what it is now... But as a result of there being this non scene - scene...it means...yes...there is a void AND the void is starting to get filled by really cool pretty european/international artists.... Karma from South Africa, Corina Round, Sam Stewart (Dave Stewarts son), Elena Degl' Innocenti (Record of the Year, LA Music Awards nominee) and others.... I would expect the Hotel Cafe scene of artists migrate and more cool international artists, get booked. Then, with a mix of the two and great local talent - a scene could develop...and one that would be very refreshing compared to tired metal hair bands and a million wanna be keith richards etc.... Sunset turned into the wanna be blvd. The Mint and Molly Malone's are still go-to places. Anyway...just thought I'd fill you in on how things are going here.... it will be interesting to see where things are in 6 months. Off to see Laura Escudi for her record release party tonight at Zanizbar in Santa Monica Here's a great video of one of the songs http://vimeo.com/10709137 cheers birdie Birdie ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V15 #159 ***************************
