Live, however, those songs are bigger and pinker and punchier. It was sad to see Goldfrapp put on a wonderful show when the entire balcony and half the loge were empty. Alison wore shredded black plastic, then ornate twisted sleeves, then a phosphorescent frilly jellyfish, then varieties of pink fur. The wind machine blowing her hair heightened her pop goddess look. The band were in full 70s regalia, a gentleman stealing the show with his 'the-bearded-one-in-ABBA' facial hair and chest fur. The musicians entered through a hole in the center of a huge padded silver disc, but rather than looking retro-space-age it suggested a Jeff Koons hemorrhoid cushion or a particularly inedible doughnut. Goldfrapp played 10 songs from earlier albums, including some surprises (I won't spoil them), so you needn't love Head First for the tour to be worthwhile. 'Ooh La La' was stompingly great and redeemed the song after that ghastly hoedown version from the previous tour. 'Train' and 'Strict Machine' were danceable, dark and sexy. The recent songs were lighter but great for singing along to and dancing stupidly. Opener Cults have apparently performed live together about 3 times. They are twee, and the singer very out of tune. I have never been in such a gay male audience, including NY's gay pride. Interesting that Head First is such a niche album. The skew was much less for Goldfrapp's last tour, and less so for Marina & the Diamonds and other pop I've seen recently.
