I totally agree generally speaking that her work post-FTE has been sub-par -- much more generic and bland (possibly with the exception of her Christmas album - I really enjoyed her atypical song selection and the touch of bitterness)... ...but her latest album actually has kept my interest. I think it's musically more adventurous, and feels a little more unsettled (in a good way). I wouldn't skip it outright - listen to "Awakenings," at least (my favorite track thus far). (of course, the answer is always and constantly "both", but you know what i mean...) > > one enormous benefit of ripping everything -- though one to which i have been adamantly opposed in the past -- is the making of playlists. i know that many artists work very hard to sequence their albums, and some use themes and motifs and, heaven help me as a child of the '60s, "concepts" to unify an album. but in my currently scattered and frayed life, just getting back to some great songs, even if heard in passing as i trudge passed the speakers with laptops and laundry, feels like a great luxury. > > 'tah! > - -g > > - -- www.gregorynormanbossert.com -- > - -- www.suddensound.com -- > > ------------------------------ > > End of ecto-digest V15 #147 > *************************** > > - -- Eric Starker estarker@gmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jun 2010 21:57:05 -0700 From: john d Subject: Re: return of morcheeba I'm listening to it now for the first time. The album opens with a downtempo groove "crimson" with ethereal guitar and soundscapes in the background supporting a mellow vocal that has a hint of pop melody. The second song "even though" builds on the energy of crimson with a slightly more up-beat groove. Even though has a catchy melodic hook that will have you singing along with her as you move your hips. The title song "Blood like lemonade" is another great song with a storyline . So far all three songs have been really good. "Mandala" starts out like a slow train pulling into the black mountain hills. It has a slide guitar and washboard feel to it with a downtempo bluesy feel with sampled voices. Skye does not sing on this track. "I am Spring" starts out with nice acoustic guitar and rif that is soon accompanied by Skyes beautiful voice. This song really lets you enjoy Skye's voice and the control she has over her tones. The next track, recipe for disaster is a joyfully dark track. Like Mandala, it has a countryish twang to it in the guitar work. The chorus is catchy melodically with repeated phrasing... something that is common to a couple of other songs on the album "Easier said than done" is perhaps the most recognizably Morcheeba song for me. I have to admit I haven't listened to them in a long time but when i heard this song I had flashbacks of listening to the one album of theirs i had. "Cut to the chase", the second to last track is a low production beatbox groove with sampled voice "scratches". No Skye vocals on this track.. it sounds like a filler on the album. The last song "Beat of the Drum" brings the album to a good closure. It has, as I mentioned before, a repeated phrasing in the chorus that makes the song catchy, this time in a Irish type of feel. The verses are dreamy and heartening. I must say... overall a very good album.
