Among other things, I got to see Michelle Shocked be utterly and completely herself -- hard to believe that next year is the 20th anniversary of "Arkansas Traveler". She's already starting to plan a tour around that, so keep an eye out for that later on this year if you're in the US. I also saw Patty Larkin play for the first time in way too long. She has discovered the loop pedal, and boy is she ever using it for good instead of evil. She also used a violin bow on her electric guitar, which was INCREDIBLE. Her new album is out next Tuesday, and features duets with folks like Dar Williams, Erin McKeown, Shawn Colvin, and The Nields. But the reason I'm writing is to let y'all know about the musical discovery of the year: The Parkington Sisters. First, go here and let the music play while you read on: http://www.parkingtonsisters.com/Site/Listen.html The Parkington Sisters are 5 sisters from Cape Cod, aged 18-29, who together comprise a string quartet + guitar, and 5-part sibling harmony. They are ASTONISHINGLY good. Lydia, the youngest is the cellist and lead vocalist, and it was clear that while they're all amazingly talented, she is the glue holding the whole group together. I also saw her jamming with other artists over the weekend, and she was really good at that, too. They don't have an album out yet, but it's coming soon. I will get it the minute it's available. They also aren't touring very much at the moment, but based on the buzz about them at the conference, that's about to change. Go forth, discover with me, and enjoy. It's rare that something this incredible comes along ... Meredith :) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Mar 2010 12:42:00 -0800 From: Subject: Re: The Parkington Sisters: musical discovery of the year the parkington sisters introduced themselves to me on myspace a year or so ago...and left comments etc...I am on my treo now but they should be easy to find via a search... www.myspace.com/birdiebreeze - -----Original Message----- From: meredith Subj: The Parkington Sisters: musical discovery of the year Date: Wed Mar 3, 2010 11:42 am Size: 1K To: ecto Hi, A couple weeks ago already (how time flies), I was at the International Folk Alliance Conference in Memphis: 4 days of non-stop acoustic music in the Memphis Marriott Downtown. Apparently the prognosis is now good for her recovery. This from her website: Phoebe Announcement, February 28, 2010 On Jan. 19 Phoebe had a hemorrhagic stroke. She had emergency brain surgery that saved her life. She is out of ICU and in intermediate care. Recovery from a stroke is a long process, but her outlook is good. Doctors are very hopeful. She just finished recording two new songs and was ready to start touring on March 23rd. That is simply on hold until she's ready. PLEASE GO TO REAL PHOEBE SNOW on Facebook for continued updates. You may send emails to her at: phoebe12@sbcglobal.net. I read them to her constantly. We are grateful for all your prayers. Thank you-- Sue Cameron Phoebe's Manager - ------- Always one of the most unique singing voices in pop music, she's an even more lovely person as anyone familiar with her family trials will attest. Here's a condensed version of things she's been through since bursting onto the music scene in the early '70s with "Poetry Man". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDGKsx3Uc9Q I remember seeing her with the N.Y. Rock & Soul Revue and her absolutely stealing the show... Her rendition of Steely Dan's "Dirty Work" is etched in my memory... though her amazing voice brings such life to anything she sings. I know I'm not alone in hoping to see her singing again as soon as possible... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Mar 2010 22:02:11 -0500 From: Paul Blair Subject: Emily Bezar news This from her Facebook: I wanted to let you all know that sonic sorcerer Robert Rich's new CD "Ylang" is here!!
