I've asked Meredith to participate in a fundraising show, Ecto style, for WPKN's "Women in Music" fundraising week, which is coming along in mid-March. We usually try to focus on a small handful of music premiums for donors, so I asked Meredith which albums she would choose (answer below). I would probably choose Meredith's same group (below), down the line. I would choose a Laurie Anderson CD (Mister Heartbreak?). Maybe something by Veda Hille as well? By the way, community radio station WPKN-FM is physically located in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and at 89.5 FM on the radio dial. We're on the web at www.wpkn.org. - --Valerie Richardson From Meredith: One of them would definitely have to be either "Hounds Of Love" or "The Dreaming", depending on the weather. >:) Or hell, maybe both. > >And because it's ecto, one of them would have to be "Warpaint" I think ... > >For the third slot that would be tough ... I'd put "Little Earthquakes", "When I Was A Boy", Bjork's "Post" and Imogen Heap's "Speak For >Yourself" on a wall and throw a dart and see which one it hit. I adore both Laurie Anderson and Bjork, geniuses, but maybe less "classic ecto"? who knows. and then Emmylou Harris and Cowboy Junkies and Heidi Berry and Robin Holcomb and October Project and and and - -g - -- www.gregorynormanbossert.com -- - -- www.suddensound.com -- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Feb 2010 22:40:46 -0500 (GMT-05:00) From: valrichardson@igc.org Subject: Warpaint Is Warpaint even available these days in CD form? I just checked Amazon. While other of Happy's CDs are available, Warpaint is only available through third-party dealers. For a personal twist I might take out Sarah (I know she's beloved but not my cuppa) and Tori (I LOVE this album but a) I prefer *Boys for Pele* and b) she might be a little redundant given Kate's presence) and put in Mary Margaret O'Hara's *Miss America* (obscure but sooo relevant) and Laurie Anderson's *Big Science *(I like *United States Live* personally but it may be a bit much). Five is sooo limiting. Others I could think of as good primers: *The Innocence Mission / Umbrella* - The Innocence Mission *Boys for Pele* / *Under the Pink* - Tori Amos *In My Tribe* - 10,000 Maniacs (more of the college rock circuit end of the spectrum) *Throwing Muses* (1986) *-* Throwing Muses (and, in the same vein, *Hips and Makers* - Kristin Hersh) *Everything's Different Now - '*'Til Tuesday (more jangly but Aimee is a staple in my collection) *Treasure / The Pink Opaque - Cocteau Twins* *Rid of Me / Dry / Stories... - PJ Harvey* *The Dreaming *et al. - Kate Bush *When I Was a Boy* / *The Speckless Sky* / *No Borders Here* - Jane Siberry (the latter two are a bit more new wave, I personally think that *The Walking* embodies ecto, even more than Happy Rhodes does!) *Spine* - Veda Hille ... on and on... * * *Also... she's proto-ecto, but seriously, so few of our classic ecto artists would exist without her... my favorite album ever... New York Tendaberry by Laura Nyro. Astounding if y'all haven't heard it.* * * *This is gonna be a great thread!!!* * * On Sat, Feb 27, 2010 at 9:00 PM, Gregory Bossert wrote: > > If you had to choose the top five classic Ecto albums, which would you > > include? > > > oof, five is never enough. but i'd say these are my essential four: > > * "Warpaint", Happy Rhodes > * "Hounds of Love", Kate Bush > * "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy", Sarah McLachlan > * "LIttle Earthquakes", Tori Amos > > and then pull out Meredith's darts, and add a few to her possible targets: > > dreamy: > * "Happiness (4AD version)", Lisa Germano > * "The Innocence Mission", the innocence mission > * Bill already mentioned Loreena McKennitt... > > songwriters: > * "Tigerlily", Natalie Merchant > * "Oyster", Heather Nova > * "Bachelor No. 2", Aimee Mann > * "The Walking", Jane Siberry (cuz Meredith already mentioned "When I was > a Boy") > > edgy: > * untitled, Throwing Muses > * "Star", Belly > * "To Bring You My Love", PJ Harvey > > and: > * all the other Happy albums > * all the other KaTe albums > > this is a sort of old-school-ecto list, i guess.
