So, what better way to start 2010 than to pick them up and give them a listen? You CAN think of better ways? Well, me too, but anyway... Lisa Germano/Magic Neighbour - I hated her last one, but this...I dunno, I like this more, although it's still a far cry from the heights of Happiness or Slide. There are some really beautiful little instrumentals on it, which help a lot, and the whole thing has a somewhat brighter feel to it than her previous release, so no regrets here. A Fine Frenzy/Bomb in a Birdcage -- brasher and poppier than her debut, but it's a little tooooo brash. I don't know if it's just my particular copy, but the sound is so bright and harsh, sometimes the vocals and backing guitars/keyboards all start chiming together and it dissolves into a sound not unlike bottles being smashed against a tin wall. I never usually notice these things -- I've waded through enough reviews of remasters that read like technical handbooks -- but this actually makes my ears hurt and seriously impairs my enjoyment of this album. Jill Sobule/California Days - love this, probably my favourite of her albums since her eponymous release. Fun, lively, witty, and finishes with a song in which she thanks those who donated money -- name by name. Not sure how 2010 is going to work out: there have been releases pretty much every week for the last month that I want to buy (Eels, David Ford, Midlake) and more to come (Tom McRae and Laura Marling) but I'm currently listening repeatedly and despairingly to Yeasayer's Odd Blood, which is already prime candidate for the worst album I hope to hear all year. Still, good news about the Katell Keineg (and, oddly, my experience with High July echoes others) and I'm due to see Jonatha Brooke (with full band!!) tonight and hoping that my recently-flagging energies don't desert me yet again. Damn, this was really supposed to be a short post. I adore their first album so much that it's in the car so I hear it every few days. I was excited to hear they were going to have a new album out. Then the single is released and it's silly pop. Oh well, it's the single. But when I listen to the rest of the samples. Yikes! Let's call it likely the worst album I'm glad I don't have to listen to. So I'll keep playing the first one. I don't get tired of it. At least it exists. Also sadly not inspired to pick up the new Massive Attack. In happier news there are plenty of great things from 2009 to keep listening to so that's what I do. I have been mostly listening to music from my iPod/iTunes on random and was thinking that maybe I didn't like Soap & Skin's Lovetune for Vacuum. Turns out that getting random tracks in the middle of other music just isn't the best way to listen to that album. Duh. Anyway, playing it straight through for the first time in months I realized how impressive it is. Hard to believe she was a teenager when she recorded it--it has such an assured feeling. Also greatly enjoying reading the Wears the Trousers blog and again thank whomever it was who first mentioned it here. - --Neile ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Feb 2010 22:48:41 +0100 From: Leonora Christina Skov Subject: The Storm / Pernille Rosendahl I'd like to draw your attention to Danish alternative rock band The Storm fronted by the charismatic Pernille Rosendahl. I have no idea if her former band Swan Lee ever made it in the States, but they were huge here a few years back. Their sound was cinematic, very James Bond-like, while The Storm is all about bombastic soundscapes, chandeliers, high fashion, and Pernille's girlish voice which has, however, matured considerably. In Denmark she's known as a big time fashionista, and I'm not sure if this is a badge of honour or not, but presently she's one of the judges in Danish X Factor as well. I think she's one to watch and The Storm has definitely a unique sound if you can get past the heavy guitars and general bombasticness. Here's my favourite track Lullaby: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHWZwM6l98s&feature=related The live version is pretty amazing as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4buslbz6J4&feature=related All best from Copenhagen, Leonora _________________________________________________________________ Nej, det er ikke svfrt at samle alle vennerne fra Hotmail, Myspace og Facebook pe Messenger.
