Jane impressed everyone with her pronunciation :) > i confess i have no idea what this tour is like: is she > accompanied or alone, and what's the setlist like? She was accompanied by small electronic box (which was operated by her opening act Monique Rhodes, and provided myriad sounds and melodies), and her own single guitar. The set was largely songs from Dragon Dreams and With What Shall I Keep Warm, woven together with her conversational story threads. There was a piano in the hall ("A beautiful old piano. Take care of it. I found things inside it that shouldn't have been there!"), and she sat at that to play Love Is Everthing and Begat Begat (which had me smiling immediately I heard the tune, and then scratching my head afterwards when figuring out which song it had been, because the words had been so different to those on Maria). There was a sing-along Calling All Angels as an encore, which sounds a little corny even now, but which was actually rather lovely. I've no idea how that compares with her other tours in recent years, but I do find it difficult to imagine her ever not being enjoyable :) I'm guessing that she regularly plays the WIWAB songs live due to their being so well known. I would have loved to have heard something from the older albums, but I suspect she probably has a fairly fixed set list for most of the shows on this tour, given the way that it was threaded together, and I'm sure she wants to focus on the new material as much as possible. (And I *was* delighted to hear something from Maria!) Writing this makes me rather sad that I haven't seen more of her live performances from the days when those albums weren't as old. (Her previous NZ show still ranks as one of the more transcendent performances I've experienced, though.) - -Phil ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Feb 2010 11:06:37 -0500 From: Karen Hester Subject: Re: ecto-digest V15 #35 Hey ectophil :) Another NZer reported that it was "one long performance piece, where her stories flowed in and out of songs", which sounds like the NYC show we saw recently. None of her 'hits' except for 'Love is everything' on keyboards (again, like NYC, which only had 'Calling all angels' and 'Hockey' from her pre Issa catalog). She had pre-recorded music for her US shows, which was tinny sounding. Plus guitar rather than keyboard, I think. Basically the same songs she's been playing live for the past few years - the one about the teenagers, the woman getting ready for a date, the phone call...
