I checked out her MySpace page on a recommendation, and liked what I heard. Plenty of ecto appeal! http://www.myspace.com/susanenan Steve ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Feb 2010 13:48:35 -0800 (PST) From: Ellen Rawson Subject: Live Music Lots of live music lined up here. Last night, we attended the Transatlantic Sessions in London (first time they'd toured outside of the Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow). The entire gig was superb, but the highlight for me was when they performed a tribute to Kate McGarrigle; both Kate and Anna have been part of the sessions in the past. They played "Talk to Me of Mendocino" with all five women present, Cara Dillon, Mollie O'Brien, Eddi Reader, Karen Matheson and Sara Watkins, sharing lead vocals and, at times, singing together in a choral manner. Sublime. Next up: Diana Jones in Basingstoke next Saturday, then Jonatha Brooke in London the following Friday (see you there, Adam!) and, finally, Judith Owen in London on the last Friday of the month. Obvious single Bring On the Wonder is infectious and it's even got Sarah McLachlan on backing vocals. I find myself humming it all the time. Plainsong is definitely a solid singer/songwriter album though not groundbreaking in any way. Susan Elan's voice is stunning and it's used to full effect here. It's also very high in the mix. There's lots of tasteful piano playing, occasional strings, and maybe a bit too many piano ballads, after all. They tend to blend together, especially towards the end. I've seen Susan Enan described as an Irish artist and that makes sense. She's not really that folksy, but on several of her quiet songs she reminds me quite a bit of Mary Black. Sarah McLachlan and the criminally unknown Monica Schroeder are other obvious points of reference. Apart from Susan Enan I'm presently listening to Close to Dark by the fantastic Fiona Apple/Rachael Yamagata-inspired Brandi Shearer, the soulful Beth Rowley, the retro-cinematic Memories at the End of the World by The Postmarks, and Piano Sparkling by the mind-blowingly talented pianist/soprano/producer Siren On. Her style is totally unique, sometimes Enigma-esque, sometimes more in the vein of Sasha Lazard or Lisa Gerrard. Here's a review: http://liferthereviewroom.blogspot.com/2009/10/siren-on-piano-sparkling.html And heres her MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/sirenon Avangeline and Evangeline are my favourites, but honestly; the whole thing is angelic. Are any of you, by any chance, familiar with Susie Suh? I've downloaded her latest EP The Bakman Tapes and consider getting her debut as well. Love her voice.
