I like Taylor Swift as well, in the same way that I like Dolly Parton. They are both talented musicians and songwriters who have a lot of professional smarts. Taylor Swift joined the professional country music songwriting union when she was 14, the youngest person ever to be so admitted. I'm sure that both of them have greatly benefited in their careers because of their attractive blond looks, but if you've got it... And Swift's videos are lovely. I dare anyone to watch the Love Story video and not get teary-eyed. I could probably start another thread from this. I think that my daughter's generation finds out about songs from watching videos. I should scope out some of the best Ecto videos. - --Valerie - -----Original Message----- >From: heidi maier >Sent: Jan 11, 2010 3:08 AM >To: ecto@smoe.org >Subject: taylor swift et al ... > >aly wrote: > >Please keep us updated, I'm curious! She is a show stopper. Sometimes when award shows are on or a special for a holiday, I will peak into the tv set and taste a few dishes. She and Brandi Carlile blow me away. Also Theresa Andeson who is I believe Scottish..I found her on Youtube sometime last year or so and loved her writing and talents. Also share her love for electronic gizmos..I love guitar and voice toys..she is the reason I got an RC50 loop station..had to. Then there is also someone I am not sure you know of here Julia Nunes. Young gal in college making music videos with her laptop..doing cover tunes and her own stuff playing mostly Ukelele..she has a cd out and working on another and has already toured europe just from all the youtube fame..Some great gals with talent, humor, sadness and vision. Then there is HR. hmmm. Haven't heard from her in awhile..Happy..I just adore you and all your talents. Grand New Year to all! So, you can imagine my horror when I find that the concert of the 'Father of Kora' is clashing with the one of the modern mistresses of the harp on next Wednesday night in Melbourne! I have put two and two together and worked out there will be a good chance Toumani will turn up at Malian singer/guitarist Vieux Farka Toure's concert two days later so I was leaning towards going to Joanna Newsom on the Wednesday night and then seeing both Africans together, but it obviously won't be the same as Toumani's band won't be there, and they're meant to be awesome. So I guess what all boils down to is- what is Joanna Newsom like live and which album should I buy of hers that's a good introduction? I've heard that she sounds like a little girl live and that she takes umbrage to comments made about that and doesn't believe it's true. Certainly that has come across in the live recordings I've heard of her, and I have to say, I do find that style a bit irritating after a while. So if she does it for the whole concert, I reckon I might not last the distance. Also, the remixes that have been released of her singles have been wonderful and they're the main way that I have got to know her stuff. Does she do her pared down versions live, or does she do the remixes? Many thanks and Happy New Year to you all - may 2010 bring as much ecto-goodness as 2009 did. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we got wind that KaTe or Happy had new albums on the way? Pigs might fly and all that, but we can always hope :-) Amanda PS I've just found out that Florence & the Machine is heading our way in March, about the same time that all the folk and world artists come out for the Port Fairy and Womad circuits. I'm going to be a very busy grrrl! Off to Handsome Family tomorrow night and Al Green on Thursday already. I think she's amazingly talented and refreshingly original. I prefer *The Milk-Eyed Mender* to *Ys* but they are both very good. *Ys* was done with Van Dyke Parks and is kind of baroque pop, which I like, but the production isn't my favorite. *TMEM* is folky. Favorite songs: "Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie," "'En Gallop,'" "Inflammatory Writ," "Emily," "Cosmia," and "Sadie." I'm envious of you, I don't think I'll ever be able to see her live (sad you don't think you'll like it(, let alone Vieux Touri. Have fun. But Toumani is a master. I saw him with the full on Symmetric Orchestra a few years ago and was completely blown away. It was one of the best shows of the year. It looks like he is touring with a reduced band right now, as his last album was just solo kora. Vieux is pretty different then Toumani though, and I bet the two shows will be quite varied. I have found myself a regular youtube viewer with a bunch of channels that I've subscribed to. Julia Nunes' (jaaaaaaa) was my first. I picked up both of her albums on itunes and she never fails to make me smile. Her originals are fun and her video performances of covers on youtube are so much fun to watch. I have been inspired to start postig my own videos someday. I sing in bands but play no instrument and I don't know how interesting my a cappella singing would be.
