The next Adele, Florence Walsh, xx...or Sandi Thom. take your pick and put the weight of an almighty PR campaign behind them before they've released a note. Sorry, did that sound cynical? It's called "future folk", apparently. I've listened to a couple of songs on YouTube, and it sounds like a whistful voice, an acoustic guitar and a drum machine and shiny, poppy production. It may appeal, but personally I feel this is a choice being made for me. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8445641.stm http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/dec/12/ellie-goulding-interview http://elliegoulding.co.uk/ I'd be interested in anyone else's reaction. Maybe that's not such a bad thing :) But there's too much of that 'shiny poppy production' as you put it; I found it quite annoying at times. All in all, I think I'll pass. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Jan 2010 14:01:04 -0000 From: "Henning Rech" Subject: Re: Happy Rhodes painting for sale on EBay Hi Dan, it`s me. After several years immersed in Hannah Montanna and such, she has discovered that there's more to music than Disney. She got the New Moon soundtrack for her birthday last week and is now listening to Swedish Likki Li's song "Possibility" over and over again. She told me last night that she likes the song because it is "sad and pretty." I told her that I have belonged to an e-mail discussion group for the past 15 years that talks about nothing but sad and pretty music, mostly by women. I'm going to load a healthy dose of Happy Rhodes music onto her ipod, but I'd like to also put together a CD of classic Ecto songs of the Kate Bush, Sarah McLachlan, Jane Siberry variety. Suggestions? Thanks much! Valerie Richardson P.S. Thanks much for all who put together end-of-the-year lists! I always enjoy going through those and listening to everything I missed during the past year. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Jan 2010 21:33:59 +0100 From: Leonora Christina Skov Subject: RE: Ecto Mix Tape for 11-Year-Old I had a similar experience a few months back; a very young friend of mine knew none of my favourite artists and I decided to enlighten her. All eras are good, their first two/three albums are more ecto, the others are sweet and folky. "And Hiding Away" is a great one from the Umbrella album; if you don't have it, I can send you the MP3. 10,000 Maniacs is the band that exposed me to Ecto, so I would recommend some of their stuff, probably starting with stuff from *Our Time in Eden* and *In My Tribe*... As far as some others... "One More Colour"/"The Waitress"/"Ingrid and the Footman"/"Everything Reminds Me of My Dog"/"The Gospel According to Darkness"/"The Life Is the Red Wagon" - Jane Siberry "Eat the Music"/"The Big Sky"/"Hounds of Love"/"Bertie"/"Wuthering Heights"/"Them Heavy People"/"Wow"/"Babooshka"/"Love and Anger" - Kate Bush "Sweet Blindness"/"Time and Love"/"Stoney End"/"Stoned Soul Picnic"/"Rhythm and Blues"/"The Cat-Song"/"Timer"/"When I Was the Freeport and You Were the Main Drag" - Laura Nyro "Mr. Zebra"/"Talula"/"Cornflake Girl" - Tori Amos "Big Hollow Man"/"Whistling for His Love" - Danielle Dax "Instructions" - Veda Hille "Go West"/"Whip-Smart"/"6'1"/"Never Said" - Liz Phair "Let X=X/It Tango"/"Walk the Dog"/"Strange Angels"/"From the Air" - Laurie Anderson "Woody and Dutch on the Slow Train to Peking"/"Juke Box Fury"/"Gravity"/"Pirates"/"The Real End"/"Chuck E's in Love" - Rickie Lee Jones "Your Ghost"/"Candyland"/"Call Me"/"Green"/"Caffeine" - Kristin Hersh/Throwing Muses "Body's In Trouble"/"Anew Day" - Mary Margaret O'Hara "The Alien Song (For Those Who Listen)"/"It's Your Life" - Milla Jovovich "Eyes Wide Open"/"What I'll Remember Most"/"Sea and Sky" - Over the Rhine "When I Was a Boy"/"The Babysitter's Here"/"Alleluia"/basically anything from *The Honesty Room*/"Closer to Me"/"It's Alright"/"The Easy Way"/"As Cool As I Am"/"The Christians and the Pagans"/"I Won't Be Your Yoko Ono"/"After All" - Dar Williams "Missed"/"Dress"/"Angelene"/"Down by the Water" - PJ Harvey (not too much of her yet) Wow, that's a lot of stuff.
