And a very Happy New Year to everyone out there. Itbs been interesting reading everyonebs bBest ofb lists. I donbt think Ibm ready to even contemplate a bbest of the decadeb, especially one that wouldnbt betray my rather narrow tastes (the same artists would crop up several times), so herebs a start on my best and worst, etc, of 2009. There should be more but, as Ibve already noted, it turns out I bought less music than any year of this decade. Not sure how this happened but here, in no particular order (IMHO): 1. bHazards of Loveb by The Decemberists. Maybe it was the right time and right place, but I love this ambitious, sprawling, epic album, with its bucolic earthiness and bluesy spirit. Even more, I loved how it confounded the critics, who could only reach for their Big Box of ClichC)s and start throwing their usual pig-ignorant bprogb slurs around. 2. bLungsb by Florence and the Machine. Again, another album so out of its time, standing head and shoulders above this yearbs crop of art-school synth-pop 80s throwbacks. A big, ballsy, bluesy voice combined with elliptical and confounding lyrics made this an uplifting experience, despite the obvious hype and big-label push (I mean, not one but TWO special editions of the same CD within the year of its release?) and despite hers being one of my most unenjoyable gigs ever, I still love this album. 3. bThin Airb by Peter Hammill. Ibm a big fan of this man, one of the great bburied giantsb of British music but, as Ibve noted before, his solo albums can be exceedingly patchy, his quality control right out of the window, and Ibll be the first to admit it. This, however, is a quiet triumph: a dark, moody and atmospheric journey through life, mortality, loss and hope in ways that only he can combine and still come up with something quite so uplifting, from the chugging guitars of bGhosts of Planesb, which sounds like it fell off the back of a David Lynch film, to the chiming, spiralling guitar lines of bIf We Must Part Like Thisb. This album took me by surprise by growing on me to the point that itbs probably one of my favourites of his. Which, after a career of over 40 years, is quite something. 4. bItbs Spooky Being Youngb by Meredith Meyer. Another dour album, but one that just glows with dark and moody beauty. Maybe I was just in the mood for this kind of thingb& 5. bFever Rayb by Fever Ray. Another surprise. On the first two listens, I absolutely hated the coldness of this, but very slowly it crept in, its icy elegance working its way under my skin. Not easy listening, but gripping. 6. bAnimab by Ashley Maher. A complete change from the above three. Warm, sunny, lilting, almost jazz-like in its free-flowing melodies, this is sunshine in a CD case. 7. bStrange Communionb by Thea Gilmore. Ibve already raved enough about this: I thought nothing could knock Greg Lake off of my Christmas tree perch. 8. bPoseidon and the Bitter Bugb by the Indigo Girls. Ibd pretty much written this pair off as they spent the decade when they were needed most paddling in some backwater writing endless, insipid love songs and folksy ruminations. Mitch Froombs production threatens to continue the cheese factor, but the bonus acoustic disc shows that, stripped down and de-Froomed, the girls still have power. Itbs still not the political album Ibd hoped for, but itbs easily the best theybve done in years. 9. bCoquetteb by Katy Carr. A late entry, but such a wonderful quantum leap from her first two albums, with a joyfully eclectic display of influences, itbs hard not to be cheered by it. The idea of music this quirky existing, and of someone having the courage to make it, can only feed the spark of hope. 10. bHunting My Dressb by Jesca Hoop. Speaking of whichb&.even more idiosyncratic and bursting at the seams with chaotic inventiveness while never losing sight of the aim of being entertaining. Jesca was mentioned on this list years ago, and I made a note but then completely forgot. Well, I got there in the end. And just in time, it seemsb&. Honorary Mention: bThings You Should Knowb by Carina Round. Only an EP, so it doesnbt really make the top 10, but a tantalising taste of what direction Carina might be taking, and containing some of her best material so far. bRecorded Deliveryb by Thea Gilmore. If only for bConcreteb, the stunning bYou and Frank Sinatrab and the blistering live version of bMy Own Private Riotb. bTwo Sunsb by Bat for Lashes. I donbt like it as much as I know I should and certainly thought I would on first listening, but it still hangs in there as an enjoyable, spooky album. bA Man and a Woman Walked Byb by PJ Harvey and John Parish. An album I really looked forward to and hoped Ibd like it much more than I eventually did. No real explanation, it just didnbt connect with me as Ibd hoped. bInland Territoriesb by Vienna Teng. Again, an album I thought Ibd like a lot more than it turned out. I loved the first few tastes we got on the net, but repeated listens haven't done anything for me and, as an album, I just donbt think it hangs together. Disappointments: bLife and Timesb by Bob Mould. His voice sounds shot and hebs leaning a bit on the auto-tune. There are a couple of promising tunes, but hebs past his best work. bFarb by Regina Spektor. Therebs nothing wrong with this album, as such. In fact, Ibm quite willing to accept that it is her best album so far. It is, however, the album that convinced me I would never, ever be a Regina Spektor fan (sorry, Garrick!). bEllipseb by Imogen Heap. Not much of an advance on the excellent last album, this actually sounds like generic Imogen, or offcuts from her previous one. bAbnormally Attracted to Sinb byb&.well, you know. After a late rally with ADP, Toribs gone back to making music solely for fans. Worst disappointment: bThe First Days of Springb by Noah and the Whale. Their first album showed immense promise with its melancholy pop but, following the lead songwriterbs romantic breakup, this is the equivalent of going round to his house for a bit of a chat and finding him still in his pyjamas and unshaven for the last two weeks, ashtrays overflowing, empty glasses all over the place and him unable to stop talking about anything but himself. Break-up albums are never going to be a lot of fun, but this, even armed with high production values, is just one long self-indulgent, self-pitying whinge. Fave film: Either bFish Tankb or bLet the Right One Inb. Or bA Simple Manb, the Coenbs best film in years. And, if you've gotten this far, thank you. I'll go away again, now.
