Katy's one of the artists I've earmarked "interesting" since I saw her open for Veda Hille a few years ago, and she's about the only artist who's CD I bought there and then. I've always liked, if not exactly loved her music. This album may change all that: I've only listened to it a couple of times, but there is just SOOO much going on here, it's a massive quantum leap on from her first two albums in terms of ambition and scope. I have a feeling that, even this late in the year, it will make my list of top CDs for the year. Interesting trivia (or not): it was recorded in a bedroom studio opposite the Muswell Hill Odeon, a lovely 1930s cinema that I used to go to a lot when I lived in North London, it being one of the more charming cinemas (exhibits of old projectors, memorabilia, etc) around. also prompted by Neile's post, I've belatedly ordered both of Jesca Hoop's CDs. She's one of those I resolved to follow closely when she was mentioned ages ago, but who completely fell off my radar. Neile's post gave me a nudge, I listened to some of her stuff on YouTube, and decided to take the chance. I agree -- it's been a great year for music.
