There are more English lyrics--and a strong environmental theme that runs through the album. It includes a version of "All Along The Watchtower," the closest "rock" piece she's done in years. http://craiglaurancegidney.wordpress.com Author, SEA, SWALLOW ME & OTHER STORIES ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Nov 2009 00:39:07 -0500 From: Paul Blair Subject: Noe Venable vs. the Rockwood Music Hall Noe Venable is one of my favorite musicians. And if the Rockwood Music Hall isn't my favorite place to hear music, it's mainly because it's small and crammed-in, not because of any problem with the sound. The sound, usually, is great. But tonight a faulty cable wreaked havoc with the first few songs Noe played, and there seemed to be a lot of other vaguely off-kilter stuff going on. E.g., the background music went down for what we thought was the start of the set, Noe sang a bit of a song--the "Our Hidden Love" poem!--which turned out just to be more sound check, during which the background music then came back. Or, the squabble going on behind me over someone taking someone else's seat. Or having to move a mike stand all the way across the stage during the set, and set it up in an awkward place. Or having a frustrating time getting the guitar tuning right. Just a bunch of enough stupid little things to keep the performers off balance. Noe started the set with a song Karen identified as "Prettiness"--it only sounded vaguely familiar to me, and apparently Noe had felt the same way about it not too long ago: Someone interviewing her played the song before her interview segment, and her reaction was: "That sounds interesting--who wrote it?" There was the song about Icarus and the bipolar person she met in the library--something like that--with the iPod rhythm track and the somewhat pop sound. Karen and Don aren't too fond of it. There was "Midsummer Night's Dream" and "Sparrow I Will Fly" and "Black Madonna," and "Bandages" for the finale. A new song was promised, and was performed, but it wasn't the "Our Hidden Love" poem. The new song was dedicated to everyone in this recession who has to hold down a bezillion little jobs in order to make it. It had some nice vocal harmonies with Matt Kanelos (electronic keyboard and melodica) and Greta Gertler (piano). Eric Metzgar was also on stage with the band, occasionally playing bodhran or cabasa. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V14 #304 ***************************
