Wild Woman Radio features the music of female artists across genres, with a slight emphasis on electro/dance but covering everything, really. It streams twice weekly at http://www.wnhu.net, from 9-11 pm Eastern time on Sunday nights and again from 2-4 pm Eastern time on Monday afternoons. (This week's show has already featured brand new music by Rachael Cantu, and is currently playing a rather interesting remix of "Hounds of Love" I'd never heard before.) Playlists and other info here: http://wildwomanradio.blogspot.com/ And of course, if you're in the New Haven, Connecticut area you can listen to it over the air at 88.7 FM during the Monday afternoon time slot. It's on right now, tune in!! Meredith :) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 02 Nov 2009 14:37:50 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: "Keep your back pressed to the sun..." Hi, Paul Blair wrote: > What other artists can you associate with characteristic themes? The most obvious, of course, is Tori Amos. :) Love her, but she's kind of the proverbial broken record when it comes to that. Jane Siberry/Issa seems to come back to certain themes, musically as well as lyrically -- birth/rebirth (both literal and metaphorical), light/darkness etc. Happy, of course, has all those songs about depression and suicide and making it through. Aimee Mann's songs often come back to the theme of the lovable loser, and people with problems in general. Amanda Palmer has several characteristic themes, most of which boil down to a basic "fuck you, asshole" sentiment. That's all I have time for now, I'm sure I'll come up with a bunch more later. The album drops in March. I am starting to set her up with radio and other interviews If anyone is interested in doing one - Gimme a shout ! Also, we are looking for reviewers. Kate's next little tour starts Nov 15th - dates here www.myspace.com/katehavnevik I just made over the myspace and have a few final touches left to go on it... and... A new website is in the works.. :-) Cheers Birdie PS Finally off pain meds & antibiotics and getting around well on my knee titanium knee :o) It's official now - I've become bionic ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Nov 2009 12:58:51 -0800 From: birdie Subject: audiophile quality CD In case any of your ears perked up at the sound of Kate's EP being an "audiophile quality CD" in the last post.... I had the masters encoded on DDPi files then burned to DVD-R and then delivered to Groovehouse Records. Groovehouse then, pressed the glass master off the DDPi files (no generation loss from the master at all) at 1x speed and made all the CD's at 1 x speed It doesn't get any better than this.... Also, the EP as a whole is not available for downloads (tho 2 songs which were licensed by Universal Republic) are on iTunes. Show Me Love & Halo. Kate let her licensing deal with Universal Republic lapse and ... We are doing everything on our own now. Also, if anyone has gotten any vinyl pressed by Groovehouse (they just started making records) I'd love to hear a review of the sound quality... and isn't it time someone reviewed the new round of vinyl by their pressing plants, gram weight, and so on??? Who's makin' the best vinyl??? and mastering it well? I have got questions concerning if it is gonna return or not. I've looked for ways to make it reappear, but I'm not sure if I'm gonna make it norwegian only or doing it in english. It is rather costly to make it fully legal though so I have to look into it and decide what I do. - -- Yngve - -- Sendt med Operas revolusjonerende e-postprogram: http://www.opera.com/mail/ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Nov 2009 23:20:02 +0100 From: neal copperman Subject: World music report from Copenhagen I spent all weekend at the World Music Exposition (WOMEX) in Copenhagen, which was great fun. I then spent the first day of my vacation here sleeping until after 1, which is about what I expected, having been up til 4 for three days in a row. WOMEX is not a particularly ecto-friendly event, but there were a handful of things that might be of interest.... Hasna el Bacharia from Algeria was terrific. My favorite performance on Friday (alongside Brooklyn Rider with Iranian spike fiddle player Kayhan Kalhor). This was no surprise, as I'd listened to her music before and knew what to expect. Gnawa trance music doesn't get prettied up in most recordings, and it was gritty and loping and transporting. You don't see women performing it a lot and Hasna has had to deal with a lot to be a musician. She plays electric guitar and gumbri (a bass-like instrument typically only played by men). There were full Nordic showcases each night, and the Nordic bands are a little more on the ecto side. I was really disappointed to miss Valravn, whose music I like, but am happy to discover that they will be performing live as part of a dance performance on Thursday and I will definitely go to that. I've suggested them before and was bummed to have missed them. Zar, from Denmark, was lovely pop-folk. Sometimes a little too sweet and poppy for me, but much of the time just perfect. I wanted to hear what they could do with an upbeat song, but I got one very ethereal instrumental, one ballad, and one Pete Seeger cover (learned from the works of Bruce Springsteen). The singer is about to embark on a round the world sailing trip, so don't expect to see anything from them in this configuration for a long time. I love Unni Lxvlid's last CD (which well deservedly won some big award for graphic design - it looks stunning), but I wasn't too excited by the show. I saw three solo a cappella songs and they were not riveting, just nice. I hear a band joined her later, but I had already moved on. (There are 5 showcase stages at WOMEX, in the stunning new Copenhagen Concert Hall. The main theater is one of the most striking and acoustically brilliant rooms I've even been in.) Watcha Clan put on a high energy dance show with a little too much reliance on drum 'n' bass beats for my taste, but when it stuck to songs with more structure then groove, I was pretty into it. Best showcases of the weekend were not ectoey at all: Hanggai - a crazy rock band from China Cedric Watson & Bijou Creole - doing the US proud at WOMEX and getting everyone dancing like mad Oreka TX - a Basque band who have revived the almost completely lost instrument called the txalaparta, which is always played in pairs. It looks like a gigantic xylophone that they hit with polls. With two people wailing on it, it creates these curious rippling patterns. They had a large band and a variety of guests as they played in front of a film of them making variations of the instrument in communities around the world - including one made out of ice! Staff Benda Belili - from DR Congo, who won the WOMEX award. A band of mostly handicapped homeless men who make the most amazingly joyful and energetic music. Parno Grazst - a great village band from Hungary I'm looking forward to seeing some more good music while I'm here this week. I've found several clubs and some interesting options, including Ane Brun on Wednesday. There's a very nice concert video up on her web site http://www.anebrun.com that was recorded in Stockholm as part of a Global Warming awareness concert. It features 24 different Swedish artists performing for 10 minutes each. I listened to it earlier and really enjoyed it. Much ecto fare - and a must for Swedophiles. What -did- surprise me is that the iconic Japanese _enka_ singer and movie actress Hibari Misora (!) made the cut; I have several vintage Nippon Columbia 45s from her heyday, as well as DVD-R dubs of two NHK TV specials devoted to her. She ended up in a pick of five which also include Toots Hibbert (Toots and the Maytals), Meredith Monk, and India's two playback singing queens, Lata Mangheskhar and Asha Bhosle. Not at all ectoish, certainly, but the selection could have been far worse.
