One never knows the circumstances of another's life and whyanother person hasn't followed through on a commitment. Something similar has happened to me before, but that's life. It's not like it involves a substantial amount of money or anything. Kudos for Yngve to addressing it off-list. I regret to say I wasn't won over. It was just her on electric guitar, with a cellist. That setup had potential, but I found the music pretty monotonous. I caught the tail end of Josh Mease before Clare et al. went on. Musically it was ok, though I didn't care much for the lyrics or the vocals. But at least not someone I would regret having to sit through as an opener. Clare Muldaur brought along a band of friends (they weren't really "roadies," were they?) to decorate the stage with dry, leafless autumn branches. For instruments, the band brought along several guitars, a few small keyboards, assorted small percussion, an electric bass, a violin, a clarinet, a recorder, a trombone, a tuba, something that looked like a cross between a washboard and a oversize cheese grater with measuring cups hanging from it, and three kazoos. This all for a band of four. Oh, yes, and besides playing recorder, violin, keyboards, etc. Olivier Manchon was also featured on "English." Every now and then I thought I could catch an echo of Issa/Siberry in Clare's voice, but as soon as I'd notice it, it was gone. Still, there was something Siberry-like in the slightly alien hairstyle, the dressing up of the stage, the magic of it. "This song is for any of you who have ever been sleepy," Clare announced by way of introduction to "Wake Up (You Sleepyhead)." See what you think: You can preview it here: http://www.spinner.com/new-releases#/24 The otherwise wonderful show was marred by a noisy trio right in front of me (right in front of the stage) who were of the sort that couldn't let a thing go by on stage without commenting on it. I finally got annoyed enough to ask them to keep it down, and they mostly did after that. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Oct 2009 23:11:22 -0400 From: Paul Blair Subject: You can lead a horse to water... [was: Meredith Meyer/Clare and the Reasons 10/20/09] Doing some research, I just discovered that Clare and the Reasons were selected as a "Top Pick" for CMJ by TimeOut NY: http://newyork.timeout.com/articles/music/79532/cmj-09-clare-and-the-reasons and featured on Daily Candy ("noogies to the man who contests the greatness of local band Clare and the Reasons."): http://www.dailycandy.com/new-york/article/76430/Clare-and-the-Reasons-Album-Release and interviewed on Wall Street Journal video: http://frogstandrecords.com/2009/10/clare-and-the-reasons-interview-on-wall-street-journal/ So why didn't this sell out? Why was I able to find a place to *sit* (at Mercury Lounge) up in front? Why was Karen able to join me up in front just before the show started? Sheesh. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Oct 2009 23:18:10 -0400 From: Paul Blair Subject: It never rains but it pours...
