When it went off this morning I heard them talk about their search for the 50 greatest vocalists. Apparently they are working on a year long series for 2010 - one great vocalist each week, I presume. Anyway, I have a sneaking suspicion some of you just might have an opinion on the matter. Here's the link to read more about it and find out how to nominate. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=113301632&ps=bb2 According to the article it's helpful to provide with your nomination a link to an audio clip. I suppose a YouTube clip might be helpful, too. Time is of the essence as this Friday is the last day for nominations. Happy certainly has a great catalog. I'm curious what some of you would pick as the best representation of Happy's voice. Certainly you'd have to mention in your nomination that, "all the voices you hear on this song are Happy's." I remember once playing one of her songs for Jon Field of Jade Warrior and he commented on that 'fellow singing with her.' When I told him, 'no, both voices are hers,' well, you can imagine his surprise. Shh. Postcrypt has a capacity of 35 so keep it to yourselves if you want to get in (oops, too late!). Also there are no mics or amps there. In fact I don't even think the performers have access to an AC outlet. All the shows are totally unplugged. The vocal bit of Happy's that freaks me out the most is in "Looking Over Cliffs" from MWABT. meth put it really well in her original review of the album (up on the Guide), saying, "...it contains perhaps Happy's most gut-wrenching vocal in the middle. I absolutely cannot wait to witness her singing the lines "Anywhere you go, here or beyond/Nothing will stop me from finding out what dream you're on" live. Humans just shouldn't be able to *do* that." meth nails it..."humans just shouldn't be able to *do* that." And yet I saw Happy perform that song live and pull off that transition. There are other live moments that are just as amazing, like her botched intro to "Lily of the Valley," in which she starts by apologizing for her tired, worn-out voice which she's concerned won't be able to hit the high notes...and then starts singing in too high a key and hits the high notes anyway, before bursting out laughing about it. jeff n.p. _A Momentary Lapse of Reason_, Pink Floyd ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Oct 2009 16:07:59 EDT From: W1GGY2@aol.com Subject: Re: NPR - 50 greatest vocalists Eh, I'm voting for Milli Vanilli :-P In a message dated 10/14/2009 3:59:07 P.M.
