This is either going to be Your Sort Of Thing or not, but it is very much my sort of thing. Capsule description: spooky, whispered mostly-electronic music. But this doesn't do it justice. http://www.myspace.com/davidturpin Katy Carr - Coquette: I've only heard a few songs from this, but it looks to be as good or better than her past two albums (which were great themselves.) I don't have a capsule description, really -- '40s throwback Katy Carr-isms? It should be great, nevertheless. http://myspace.com/katycarrmusic ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Oct 2009 03:58:23 -0400 From: robert bristow-johnson Subject: Re: The Paper Raincoat deets On Oct 6, 2009, at 1:04 AM, birdie wrote: > Ha ha!! > > The cardboard BIKINI???? > > ROTFLMAO i guess so. i'm pretty dense, since i totally missed the connection, but i did click on the link and saw the result. very cool. now i get it. Live, they don't exactly rock the house, and their sound -- kind of Young Marble Giants/Velvet Underground -- is suited for a smaller, more intimate venue, a club where you can lean in and pay attention. But, market forces dictate, and the powers that be are putting them on in a headlining slot in the same venue sometime in the near future. They have the benefit of being very different from what's popular at the moment, and as the critics have now tired of the guitar/indie monster that they've spent the last few years helping to create (now referrring, sneeringly, to "indie landfill") this works very much in their favour, so watch this space. That somewhat cynically said, I was definitely intrigued by their sound -- it has a delicate, unpretentious beauty --and have tracked down some of their stuff on YouTube. I'm not sure if I could handle a whole album of it, but it might just be a chance I'm willing to take...
