They also did a great version of Marc Bolan's "20th Century Boy" in "Velvet Goldmine". My brother turned me on to Placebo few years ago. They are a very good band. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-ecto@smoe.org [mailto:owner-ecto@smoe.org] On Behalf Of kerry white Sent: Monday, September 14, 2009 10:53 PM To: That warm and fuzzy [place] Subject: Re: Vampire Diaries HI, Can anyone tell me who did the version heard on CSI a season or two ago? I thought he was a far better actor than his material, and I admit to having a soft spot for "Dirty Dancing" (and his rather magnificent turn in "Donnie Darko") Jim Carroll I remember from the late 70s and his single "People Who Died", plus sitting opposite him on the NY subway about then and being fascinated by his red hair and almond eyes. Lots of suffering but he never showed it! Jim Carroll was married to my friend, the lovely fantastic music attorney, Rosemary Carroll...in the 70's. He was a fiercely brilliant poet, and of irish catholic stock...which is where the red hair and almond eyes came from.... :-) Cheers Birdie On Sep 15, 2009, at 12:33 AM, Adam Kimmel wrote: > About as off-topic as you can get, but I just read that Patrick > Swayze died, and he's always been one of my guilty pleasures. Charming melodic simple contemporary American folk with country tinges on her earlier albums, and some fuller pop arrangements on her latest (eg 'Hologram'). Some very cute love songs (whistling!), but she does melancholy wonderfully too. She's supporting Brandi Carlisle at the moment. Hopefully she'll come around solo again. Here Come the Vikings by ASTRID WILLIAMSON (ex-Goya Dress). I wasn't so keen on her solo live but this catchy full-band record has lots of great tracks. I particularly like the soaring atmospheric 'Slake'. Bimbling by MARTHA TILSTON. Lovely British folk, pretty wavery voice, strings and flute, songs about relationships and contemporary life with a sprinkling of fireflies and seagulls. Tale to Tell by THE MUMMERS. Theatrical, carnivalesque, a distinct sound. Blue Roses by BLUE ROSES. Like someone said, a bit Joanna-Newsom-on-guitar-ish. And similarly to Joanna, you can hate Blue Roses' (Laura Grove) voice ("shrill"). Emusic reviewer finds her "enchanting, otherworldly, haunting, bewitching". That's a bit much - I find her cute :) I Like the layered voices, appreciate the piano tinkling. "I wish I..." is kinda epic. Influenced by Kate Bush, but doesn't sound like her. k ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V14 #254 ***************************
