"these parts" being brisbane, australia ... and, oh, i'd describe her live shows if i could, but i'll say instead that she is really just best experienced live. she's got a phenomenal voice (she trained in opera) and although words like "kooky" and "eccentric" are often bandied about, i'd just say instead that she's definitely a true original, definitely unique, and most definitely worth getting along to see :) visit her website -- http://www.katemillerheidke.com -- and click on ... what else? ... live shows/tour info for actual dates. neither her records nor her video clips are really adequate preparation for quite how interesting she is live, but for those who are curious, a search on youtube will yield many results. i'd love to hear about it if any ectophiles go along to see her ... warmly, heidi. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 04 Sep 2009 11:07:05 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Attention SF-area ectophiles: 9/8 at the Hotel Utah (and other CA shows) Hi all, This is for the SF Bay Area ectophiles (Jessica and Greg, I'm looking at *you* ... ;): This Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 8 pm at the Hotel Utah (4th & Bryant): RACHAEL SAGE and KATIE COSTELLO Info and tickets here: http://www.hotelutah.com Katie Costello is 18, and she is a genius. I think she blows Regina Spektor out of the water in every possible way, but that is the closest and most useful comparison. She and Rachael will be sharing a band, too: Dave Eggar (of Evanescence) on cello, and Charlie Palmer on drums. They will also be sharing the bill in SoCal, on Thursday the 10th at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach (9pm), and on Saturday the 12th at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood (7pm). If there's anyone lurking out there in the Paso Robles area, Rachael will be at The Pour House on Wednesday the 9th at 8:15pm, and for San Diego folk, she'll be at Lestat's at 9pm on Friday the 11th. Also looking forward to highs of 63 with an 80% chance of rain :) I had the Minus 5 on my list, as I've always been curious about what their show would be like. The cello project sounds fun too. I don't know MIrah or Metric. Those are exactly the kind of suggestions I was looking for. Something to steer for in the wave of unknown bands. When I put it out on my Facebook page, I got a slew of Michael Franti's, Dave Alvin's and Old 97's. Franti comes to New Mexico every year and we presented Dave Alvin a few weeks ago, so that wasn't a very interesting set of suggestions! (And I knew my Americana leaning friends would drool over Old 97's.) Now, what I need is more music that I will love and I'm looking for help. I have a lot of music, and I know all the well-known Ecto artists and know what I think. What I'm looking for is suggestions for one album by one artist in each of the following three categories: The New artists that are new on the scene. The Old artists that once made great music but whose careers ended years ago (for whatever reason) without their becoming well-known. The Obscure artists that are neither new nor old but just not well- known (for whatever reason), even within the ecto world. Now here's the kicker: If you don't absolutely, unreservedly love an album by an artist, don't suggest it. I just finished clearing my collection of music that was only pretty-good and I'm not looking for more of that class. What I want is the best. Also, don't worry about trying to guess about whether I would love it; I'll worry about that. What I want is the stuff that really gets *you* going, albums that you want to listen to again as soon as you finish them. Thanks for any suggestions! She's a fabulously quirky lo-fi alterna-pop singer songwriter on K Records. We've been talking about her on ecto at least since her second album came out about 7 years ago. Her third release, _C'mon Miracle_ is my favorite of hers, in that it's the most consistent. The early albums had some truly great stuff, mixed in with some, well, less great. And the most recent release, _(A)spera_ has some really nice stuff too. LOL, there's a name that fits your criteria perfectly: Kirsty Stegwazi remains my favourite artist, her 2001 "Jailbirds" remains my favourite record of all time.. yet nobody else likes her. http://ectoguide.org/guide.cgi?search=&source=quick&pw=yes&for=stegwazi ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 04 Sep 2009 17:11:51 -0400 From: Sarah Morayati Subject: Fwd: The new, the old, and the obscure New: Fever Ray's album is well worth getting, even though I wouldn't recommend putting it back on right after you finished listening to it. Paranoia has been born that way. Old: Sophie Zeyl, _Two Ways Of Running_ - My favorite discovery of 2009 to date and one of my favorite debuts, ever. It's gorgeous, warm, and *graceful*. She supposedly has a new album coming, but it's been a while since the announcement. Obscure: Tychonaut, preferably _Love Life_ but if you can't find this (which is almost a certainty unless you're in Ireland, and maybe even then), _This Is_. At turns experimental, anthemic, heartbreaking, it's one of my favorite albums ever. (Lead singer/songwriter Carol Keogh is working on some solo material, also.) And even though you've probably heard about them, _Speedbath_ by Kristin Hersh and _Abnormally Attracted To Sin_ by Tori Amos are just that good. Tori's album has been out for a while and keeps growing on me more and more every day. And Kristin's album won't be out for a few months, but from everything she's said, it's going to be even better than what she's released already. - -------- Original Message -------- Subject: The new, the old, and the obscure Date: Fri, 04 Sep 2009 08:43:26 -0700 From: Bowen Simmons To: Ecto OK, So I finished a long pruning of my music collection of music that I liked, but didn't love.
