I liked Greta's observation that Noe's alternate song-writing personality 'Eon Elbanev' sounds like a cult leader. Noe says she'll carefully restrict Eon's participation to music. The Midsummer Night's Dream video is here - http://www.youtube.com/user/merigoldmp. The smooth spinning scenes are all by hand-held camera! Can you lot help me figure out her unrecorded songs? Pre-Zipper Factory: The Hidden Word (previously called 'Lives here somewhere'?) Pontito (Oliver Sacks one) Eagle? (I get my birds muddled; about friend Dan) Honey of Experience (she hasn't played this for ages :( About Sufis spinning and bees) (African garden of Eden song played on the piano at Zipper Factory) Post-Zipper Factory: Fathering Sun Garden (I say on guitar, Paul says on piano) (another garden song; one is on piano, the other guitar) Howl (which one is that?) Bandages The Hawk Song (a third bird one) (song inspired by student with problems) Pandemonium Ghazal (Sufi poem put to music) (Song during which iPod was fired 27 Aug; perhaps about sex :) kkkkkkkk ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Aug 2009 07:58:33 -0700 (PDT) From: Tim Jones-Yelvington Subject: Re: Noe's unrecorded songs re: noe performances I can't attend -- I can barely open these emails I'm so jealous. Are any of you NY folks going to see Elaine Lachica at Pete's Candy? Please do. I think she's amazing, although I haven't seen her live. ~tim - ----- Original Message ---- From: Karen Hester To: ecto@smoe.org Sent: Friday, August 28, 2009 9:44:13 AM Subject: Noe's unrecorded songs Wonderful concert, as Paul said. Far too loud for little Rockwood Music Hall, but fun angry loud music. My favorite was 'Marked Man' with Mieka singing threateningly as she rhythmically thumped her guitar, just percussion and voice. Most of her stuff is too in-between for me, not enough country or punk or folk so I'm reminded of MOR Etheridge and Sheryl Crow. 'All the same mistakes' is still one of her best songs. Crow! That's one of Noe's birds that I forgot! The song about drummer Dan? Mieka and band do a nice job of promoting themselves with free EPs to entice new listeners to live shows. I have one for D&L, and another spare. http://www.myspace.com/mieka - download live show etc. It's weird watching a band with muscles. Lean muscular arms with prominent veins attacking guitars like it's a battle. I'm so used to mangy musicians! Can you be hip whilst tanned and muscular? I should be charitable - when these poor people exercise they can't help but develop muscles, they're cursed by uncool genes; I exercise and just develop a huge appetite. Off to scarf some peanuts. Howard Fishman I know something about, having heard him play when Brazz Tree opened for him at Poisson Rouge not too long ago. Not really my thing, but the skill of the performers had me liking it anyway. Pharaoh's Daughter I'd never heard of before, so I went over to their website. One of the reviewers writes, "The spiritual kid sister of Ofra Haza checks in with something thatbs Jewish but sure ainbt Klezmer. ...Wild stuff that plays with abandon and is sure to grab your ears." What I've heard so far, I like. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Aug 2009 20:08:59 -0600 From: neal copperman Subject: Re: Pharaoh's Daughter I've seen Pharoah's Daughter before and they are excellent! That description is pretty apt, though I think it's all a wee bit more ethereal. Meredith :) ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V14 #239 ***************************
