Today's Subjects: ----------------- Wears the Trousers & Maude Maggart & Boh Runga [Leonora Christina Skov Subject: Wears the Trousers & Maude Maggart & Boh Runga Hi there, Yesterday I discovered two amazing things: 1) The magazine Wears the Trousers http://wearsthetrousers.com/ They review all my favourite female artists and in their last issue they feature artists like Ane Brun, Marissa Nadler, Emilmana Torrini, Amanda Palmer, Camera Obscura, Tara Jane O'neil, Alessi's Ark, Soap&Skin, First Aid Kit, and Carina Round. I want a subscription now. 2) Fiona Apple's sister Maude Maggart. You got to see this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILuoAlIP80w She doesn't sound like Fiona at all, but she looks so much like her and her interpretation of the Carpenters' Superstar is just amazing. Oh, I also discovered that Bic Runga has got a sister named Boh Runga. I wouldn't say she's on a par with Bic, but this is quite a catchy song nontheless: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8g97snL1ZPg All best, Leonora "I never go outside unless I look like Joan Crawford the movie star. Thanks for posting that link! I've never heard Maude Maggart singing something as "new" as "Superstar". As a rule she only performs rather older songs, basically American standards, either a capella or with simple piano accompaniment. I picked up her first two album, _Look for the Silver Lining_ and _With Sweet Despair_ from CD Baby a few years ago, and I'm pretty sure she's had some mentions on ecto along the way. Both discs are nice, but I find that I like her in small doses; it's rare for me to listen to an entire album, but I always enjoy it when one of her songs randomly shuffles onto my iPod. As for whether or not she sounds like her sister, have a listen to "It's Only a Paper Moon" from _With Sweet Despair_, on which the Maggart sisters duet! When Maude is singing in a lower register than she does in that "Superstar" clip, they sound uncannily alike. jeff n.p. _Details_, Frou Frou, while trying to rein in my impatience for tomorrow and _Ellipse_ to arrive! ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V14 #235 ***************************
