Hello all, Was bummed when my brother in Pittsburgh called me yesterday to tell me that he heard that Les Paul has passed away. The first time I had the pleasure of seeing Les perform was in the basement down at Fat Tuesday's. This was before his long run at Iridium. I, needless to say was flabbergasted. The second time I got to see Les was at Iridium, the one up by Lincoln Center, this was before they moved down to Times Square. That night, who shows up to sit in but Jeff Beck and Steve Miller. What a monster show that was, they spend most of the night improvising on standards. They did a twenty minute version of How High The Moon that was positively brilliant. The fact that Les was spot-on didn't surprise me as much as how Jeff and Steve performed that night. I didn't ever imagine I'd see them in anything resembling a subservient role during a performance, and even though you could tell they were deferring to the master they did some of what was easily their most impressive work. You could tell they were totally stoked, it showed. They were enjoying the whole thing as much as the audience who sat with their jaws on their chests and their eyed bugged out. It was one of the most remarkable and memorable nights of music I can remember. Les was kind enough to pose for photographs for me on two different occasions and subsequently was very gracious about autographing them. The first time was a bit of a fluke, I was down at the atrium at Battery Park City for a show by Robert Fripp and the League of Crafty Guitarists. Les was scheduled to perform in that space the following week (A show I was distressed about not having been able to attend) and he was there to scope out the venue and check out the acoustics. Fripp was there with 21 clones brandishing Ovations and spent most of the show throwing out glistening sonic textures. I'm more of a fan of his King Crimson type stuff but you couldn't help but be amazed by their coordinated precision. Because of what they were doing I think Les was having a bit of problem getting a read on the sound of the room but you could tell he found the whole thing to be astonishingly amusing. I immediately recognized Les from a good distance away and since I had my camera in my hands I thought I had nothing to lose by asking him if he'd pose for a snap. He couldn't have been nicer about it. I was very nervous and prayed the snap wouldn't be blurred by a shaky hand. I just took two shots, since he was nice enough to do this for me I didn't want to take advantage. When I got the shots back from the lab there was a sigh of relief, one is now signed, framed and treasured. A slightly distorted version of the second shot of Les that I took (this one at Iridium) is up on my Facebook. Since he moved to the Times Square Iridium I had dragged a number of friends and relations including my 83 year old mom out for the Monday night shows and was never disappointed. What a bummer, he will be missed. What a bummer, he will > be missed. I was also lucky enough to see Les at Iridium (only once, since I live in California and was visiting NY) -- a treasured memory. He was an amazing performer, even though his fingers were somewhat disfigured by arthritis by this point, and I was impressed at how he stayed after the show to chat and sign autographs with everyone who wanted to meet him. A super classy guy. - --Sue ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Aug 2009 13:15:23 -0400 From: JoAnn Whetsell Subject: FW: Blame Sally - Pacific Northwest Tour and the NEW FREIGHT! I haven't seen them live, but their excellent live album always makes me wish that I could. Anyway, if eclectic folk-pop music with four talented women on instruments and gorgeous vocals sounds good to you, run, don't walk, to these shows. I lived in Boston in the early 1970s, listened to WBCN almost exclusively every day, loved Charles Laquidara's Big Mattress, and WBCN's great sound lasted longer than most other stations that are owned by Infinity Broadcasting. But all is not quiet, yesterday Charles Laquidara sent me some notes on my Facebook account about plans for an evening event in the Boston area on 26 Sept, for former Big Mattress crew, whether they were paid, volunteers, or interns... see below: > B-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-IG MATTRESS! > > Aug 13 at 9:31pm > > Attention: If you worked on the Big Mattress crew or on the Duane Glasscock show, and you will be in the New England area, on September 26, please sign on. > > Send an email to MattressCrew@yahoo.com with your name, address, e-mail address and phone number. Include the year(s) you worked there, what your job was and (if you can remember), please include an anecdote from your experience. - -- John ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V14 #225 ***************************
