It was not heavily promoted. I had no idea she was here or I certainly would have been there. I heard not a peep anywhere about the concert. Color me bummed. Infinity Broadcasting, the owner, in itsb infinite wisdom, has pulled the plug on the station and will be replacing it with an easy listening station.B Mix98.5 will be moving in to BCNbs frequency and a new all talk sports station will land at 98.5 B WBCN will continue on as an internet only station. B Sadly, this is the end of a long slow decline that began in the mid 90bs when they started carrying Howard Stern in the morning drive time slot and exiling Charles Laquidara and his Big Mattress morning show to the classic rock station in town. The quality and variety of music just kept declining over the past 10 years and Ibm amazed to say that I didnbt even have a radio preset in my car for them anymore. B WBCN was a rare breed of station; it used to actually break new music and play songs other than hit singles.B It was the only station in Boston that I can remember hearing ecto-ish artists, even if it was not too often.B You could hear an occasional Kate song, Sarah (even before FTE) and Tori.B The DJs actually would play requests, as well as some of their own favorites.B B I think anyone from Boston, or who went to school in Boston, knew what a force they used to be.B Th e past few days have seen them interview a slew of the old DJs and personalities on the air, better to go off with the those as the final memories of the station rather than what it had devolved into. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Aug 2009 19:24:46 +0000 (UTC) From: rlovejoy@comcast.net Subject: Re: RIP WBCN Oh, this hurts! I was in Boston at WBCN's early daze (this was around 1969). I had gone to college with the program director, Sam Kopper (he was two years ahead of me) and he invited me to the studios when I moved there. It was so non-corporate, laid back, freeform and fun. I had to leave Boston (drafted), but came back in the early eighties and the station was just a little different, a bit more corporate but still very much a good station. Once more I had to leave Boston after five years (great job offer in Philly), but every time I've returned to Boston, the station sounded less and less cool. This is sad. Shame on Infinity, and all corporate bottom-liners who killed radio. Even XM isn't so great anymore. Thank goodness for the internet. Pandora and Slacker (and others) still have a clue. Peace out, y'all, and while I'm here, a belated Happy to Happy! You can buy web albums for 80 cents, which is good for these cash strapped times! You can listen to a full song once for free, and embed the albums on facebook etc. I'm checking out Grooveshark in a few. I have added about 62 songs. I will add everything Vickie is putting up, overtime. Anyone with a blip account can swing by and add any of the songs to their playlist or blip them into social networking sites. I am also going to start working on getting Happy's music into Film/TV - - all of course possible with help from Vickie.
