They fall into mild-pretty-twee-cool-hairdresser music for me and need a bit more of some edge (or to be more ethereal). Mind you, I constantly change my mind about such things. I usually like a couple Camera Obscura songs per album (eg 'Lloyd I'm ready to be heartbroken'), but the newest album 'My maudlin career' has more songs that break out of twee-cute-indie-pop for me. Or maybe they stay within that genre, but in a perfect way. I love 'Swans' - "No surprises in my record collection / You must have thought I was someone else." That's a perfect post-Smiths British indie-pop lyric, that is. Maybe I just need to listen more? :) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Aug 2009 20:03:47 -0400 From: JoAnn Whetsell Subject: out of the loop or no discussion? Have I been that much out of the loop or has there really been so little discussion of some 2009 releases? I'm thinking of the Bird & the Bee's Ray Guns Are Not Just the Future, St. Vincent's Actor (great, but not quite as great as Marry Me), Jenny Owen Youngs' Transmitter Failure, Sarah Lentz's Begin Again, and the Fiery Furnaces' I'm Going Away. Any thoughts? Finally, searching through iTunes I found it: The song Shadows sounded like The Rip from Portishead Third. Compare them both and see if you hear it. Michael PS: Third is my favorite CD of the decade. I never get tired of playing it. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Aug 2009 21:47:35 -0700 (PDT) From: neile Subject: Re: Au Revoir Simone On Wed, 5 Aug 2009, Michael Pearce wrote: > PS: Third is my favorite CD of the decade. I never get tired of playing it. Definitely a great CD. It has been in our car player for months and months and I never get tired of it. That and Yeasayer. And Tuneyards. Everything else I skip over. (I'm really bad at actually remembering to swap them out.) - --Neile ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V14 #216 ***************************
