It's the best thing she's released in years. Maybe people aren't parsing this correctly. Maybe they're looking for another Little Earthquakes or Boys for Pele or Scarlet's Walk or (for some reason) Beekeeper. This is nothing of the sort. It isn't even another From The Choirgirl Hotel, which was my first reaction. No, this is Tori's noir album. Listening to this before 10 p.m. is missing the point. It's obvious from the very first song, "Give," which could almost be Dummy-era Portishead. There's "Strong Black Vine," which is basically "Body and Soul" with a few guitars swapped out for strings, and the heartbreaking "Curtain Call," and "That Guy," which might as well be performed on a bare stage in a forgotten nightclub in the heart of a city you won't remember the next day. The stage metaphors aren't an accident. And then there are the surprises. There are the guitars that come in halfway through "Abnormally Attracted to Sin," turning what used to be simply a slow-burn noiry song - an amazing one, but not much on stylistic variation - into something with propulsion and heft. It's going somewhere. You care where it's going. You care if it reaches the next step up the scale. You care how the backing vocals swoop around each other, and you care how it resolves. Music should make you care. We've got another contender for second-best of the year, folks. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Jul 2009 01:23:48 -0400 From: robert bristow-johnson Subject: Re: artists that sound like a dead ringer for someone else? Of course, I'm one of those types who thinks ADP is one of her best albums, so YMMV. - --Doug ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Jul 2009 06:47:51 -0500 From: Paul Jensen Subject: Re: Tori Amos - Abnormally Attracted To Sin Couldn't agree more, morayati. Great description of the album and mood. I did my best to sway all of the naysayers upon its release, but it seemed people weren't having it! The album, in pieces, worked its way under my skin big-time. It will definitely rank somewhere in my Best Of list this year. Paul - -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "This is the time. ADP has some great stuff on it, but she desperately needed someone with a red pencil to go through and cut about 20-30 minutes from it...the 80 minute album is just way too long. I've been enjoying AAtS a fair amount, but it'll be interesting to see if it stands the test of time for me; most of Tori's albums after UtP haven't, with the exception of Scarlet's Walk. The others I'll pull out from time to time, and (mostly) enjoy...but I don't still get the raw thrill from them that I do from LE or UtP. jeff n.p. _Reservoir_, Fanfarlo ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Jul 2009 09:33:34 -0400 From: Michael Quinn Subject: Re: Tori Amos - Abnormally Attracted To Sin Personally I am almost the opposite. I think "Boys For Pele" and From "The Choirgirl Hotel" Those and SW are my three favorites from Tori. I think they are totally brilliant brilliant. Three of the greatest albums I have ever heard by anyone. While the her first two albums are great I think she really developed her sound around the 1996-2002 period. The maligned "Strange Little Girls" and "To Venus and Back" also have some really great tracks on them.' "The Beekeeper" is the only album of hers I'd say I don't really like. Even that one has a few saving graces ("Garlands" is beautiful) but on the whole it's just boring and probably has about the 9 or 10 worst songs Tori has ever recorded concentrated on it. I'm not really sure how I feel about AAtS yet. I definitely like some of the songs on it but I need to listen to it more.I don't get the urge to obsessively listen to any new Tori album that comes out like I used to. "The Beekeeper" killed that for me. So it takes me longer to digest them. I don't think Jo is intentionally trying to sound like Kate. Their voices are just very similar (at least to my ear). Anyway, I've also been pretty impressed with what I've heard from Ms. Gabriel and would also recommend Ectophiles check her out if you haven't heard her.
