Today's Subjects: ----------------- Florence & the Machine [Adam Kimmel ] Hope Sandoval has a new album out on September 15! [Leonora Christina Sko] Louisa John-Krol - Faerieworlds Festival August 2009 ["Bill Mazur" Subject: Florence & the Machine I've been listening to F&tM's album, "Lungs", pretty constantly in the last week, and it's a weird beast, all right. At once dense, layered, uplifting and unlike anything I've been hearing for a while, it's going to take quite a while to get the full measure of it. there's almost too much going on, here, too many layers to peel back. It's a rich but joyous stew and one I'm going to be enjoying for some time. Underpinning it, of course, is her voice, the big, ballsy, bluesy voice that impressed me so much when I saw her live last year. My current attempt to see her live seem doomed to failure. I don't think I've ever latched on to anyone so early, to watch them go so stratospheric so fast that I feel like I'm the only one who can't catch up. Having missed the Bloomsbury gig by hesitating a day, I was told -- in advance, by Mike Gray -- that she'd be playing the Shepherd's Bush Empire, but still continually kept turning up on the web too late, and in the end, out of a total of three nights in that place, have only a ticket up in the gods on the first night. I've been promised that I can upgrade it but, as the same person promised me a ticket to the Bloomsbury gig and didn't come through, I'm not holding my breath. But, yes, buy "Lungs" - it's a wondrous experience. Adam K. ____________________________________________________________ FREE 3D EARTH SCREENSAVER - Watch the Earth right on your desktop! Just thought I'd let you know. More info: http://pitchfork.com/news/35854-mazzy-stars-hope-sandoval-returns-with-new-al bum/ On heavy rotation here in Copenhagen: The Mummers: Tale to Tell (SPECTACULAR fully orchestrated bliss. Very retro) Soap & Skin: Lovetune for Vacuum (I have been listenening to this album all year. Absolutely unique sound!) Lucky Soul: The Great Unwanted (similar to Camera Obscura and the Pipettes, but better, in my opinion) Emily Wells: The Symphonies (a bit like CocoRosie and Silje Nes with a splash of Feist) Miranda Lee Richards: Light of X (pure catchy pop) Kaki King: Dreaming of Revenge (love her guitar playing, don't really love her voice and lyrics) Regina Spektor: Far (still hope this one will grow on me) And finally .. Spect Mountain: Some Sweet Relief (which reminds me a bit of Hope Sandoval) All best, Leonora "I never go outside unless I look like Joan Crawford the movie star. A friend on Ecto, Bill Mazur, has graciously invited me to share this news with you. Some of you know my music on the French faerie-world label Prikosnovenie and another indie label, Forest of the Fae, in USA; perhaps you've read the excellent reviews by another of your members, Craig Gidney, whose book "Sea, Swallow Me" I highly recommend; or maybe you share an interest in mythology, poetry and faerielore... So quite possibly this event is for you: the Faerieworlds festival is happening in Oregon very soon, and I'm happy to announce that I'm singing in it on Saturday 1st August, backed by Woodland (whom I'll also be joining for their own set on Friday). Songs in my set on Saturday will be a selection spanning 5 albums. If you're already going, please note that the venue changed to accommodate more people, following record ticket sales. The new venue is Mount Pisgah in the Buford Park Recreation Area, just outside Eugene, Oregon: http://www.faerieworlds.com Hope to see you there! - Louisa" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Jul 2009 14:26:29 -0700 From: birdie Subject: Re: Hope Sandoval has a new album out on September 15! Wheeeeee !! http://tiny.cc/7d9S7 If you click on "read more" you get to the MP3 player with Hope's new song "Blanchard" Most interesting that Nettwerk picked her up. They did some major house cleaning awhile back and when that was done, said they only wanted to focus on original artists...
